[भीस्म] साधु पश्यति वै दरॊणः कृपः साध्व अनुपश्यति कर्णस तु कषत्रधर्मेण यथावद यॊद्धुम इच्छति ॥ ४-४६-१ ॥
'Bhishma said, “The son of Drona observes keenly, and Kripa also perceives rightly. As for Kama, it is solely out of adherence to the duties of the Kshatriya order that he desires to fight."' ॥ 4-46-1 ॥
english translation
आचार्यॊ नाभिषक्तव्यः पुरुषेण विजानता देशकालौ तु संप्रेक्ष्य यॊद्धव्यम इति मे मतिः ॥ ४-४६-२ ॥
'No wise man would reproach the preceptor. Yet, in my view, we must engage in battle, taking into account both the time and the place.' ॥ 4-46-2 ॥
english translation
यस्य सूर्यसमाः पञ्च सपत्नाः सयुः परहारिणः कथम अभ्युदये तेषां न परमुह्येत पण्डितः ॥ ४-४६-३ ॥
'Who could remain unconfused when faced with five valiant adversaries, radiant like five suns, warriors of great prowess, just emerging from hardship?' ॥ 4-46-3 ॥
english translation
सवार्थे सर्वे विमुह्यन्ति ये ऽपि धर्मविदॊ जनाः तस्माद राजन बरवीम्य एष वाक्यं ते यदि रॊचते ॥ ४-४६-४ ॥
'Even those well-versed in dharma are perplexed concerning their own welfare. Therefore, O king, I say this to you—whether my words find favour or not.' ॥ 4-46-4 ॥
english translation
कर्णॊ यद अभ्यवॊचन नस तेजः संजननाय तत आचार्य पुत्रः कषमतां महत कार्यम उपस्थितम ॥ ४-४६-५ ॥
'What Karna said was meant solely to bolster our flagging courage. As for you, O son of the preceptor, forgive all past grievances.' ॥ 4-46-5 ॥
