यस तरिभिर नित्यसंपन्नॊ रूपेणास्त्रेण मेधया सॊ ऽशवबन्धॊ विराटस्य पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम ॥ ४-१८-३१ ॥
'He who was ever endowed with the three perfections—beauty, mastery of arms, and keen intellect— that same Nakula, once a terror to enemy hosts, is now the keeper of Virata’s steeds, training and driving them with expert speed. Behold, O Bhima, the turn of Time!' ॥ 4-18-31 ॥

अभ्यकीर्यन्त वृन्दानि दाम गरन्थिम उदीक्षताम विनयन्तं जनेनाश्वान महाराजस्य पश्यतः ॥ ४-१८-३२ ॥
'Alas! I now behold that handsome youth standing in attendance before the splendidly adorned and noble Virata, king of the Matsyas—displaying horses for his pleasure.' ॥ 4-18-32 ॥

अपश्यम एनं शरीमन्तं मत्स्यं भराजिष्णुम उत्तमम विराटम उपतिष्ठन्तं दर्शयन्तं च वाजिनः ॥ ४-१८-३३ ॥
'I saw him, the embodied one, the fish, the most radiant and excellent, the vast one standing near, and showing the horses/steed.' ॥ 4-18-33 ॥

किं नु मां मन्यसे पार्थ सुखितेति परंतप एवं दुःखशताविष्टा युधिष्ठिर निमित्ततः ॥ ४-१८-३४ ॥
'O son of Pritha, though I am wracked by a hundred miseries for the sake of Yudhishthira, yet you, O slayer of foes, still think me happy?' ॥ 4-18-34 ॥

अतः परतिविशिष्टानि दुःखान्य अन्यानि भारत वर्तन्ते मयि कौन्तेय वक्ष्यामि शृणु तान्य अपि ॥ ४-१८-३५ ॥
'And now, O Bharata, hear from me, O Kaunteya, of other sorrows even greater than these that afflict me—sorrows that still lie ahead of all I have spoken.' ॥ 4-18-35 ॥
