वैडूर्यान काञ्चनान दान्तान फलैर जयॊती रसैः सह कृष्णाक्षाँल लॊहिताक्षांश च निर्वर्त्स्यामि मनॊरमान ॥ ४-१-२१ ॥

'As a courtier in the service of that high-souled monarch, I shall dwell at his side. There, on elegant chessboards, I shall move ivory pawns—white, red, blue, and yellow— guided by the fall of black and red dice, delighting the king with my skill in play.' ॥ 4-1-21 ॥

vaiDUryAna kAJcanAna dAntAna phalaira jayòtI rasaiH saha kRSNAkSA~la lòhitAkSAMza ca nirvartsyAmi manòramAna ॥ 4-1-21 ॥

आसं युधिष्ठिरस्याहं पुरा पराणसमः सखा इति वक्ष्यामि राजानं यदि माम अनुयॊक्ष्यते ॥ ४-१-२२ ॥

'If the king should question me, I shall say, ‘I was once the closest companion of Yudhishthira—cherished as dearly as his very life.' ॥ 4-1-22 ॥

AsaM yudhiSThirasyAhaM purA parANasamaH sakhA iti vakSyAmi rAjAnaM yadi mAma anuyòkSyate ॥ 4-1-22 ॥

इत्य एतद वॊ मयाख्यातं विहरिष्याम्य अहं यथा वृकॊदर विराटे तवं रंस्यसे केन कर्मणा ॥ ४-१-२३ ॥

'This is how I shall spend my days, as I have now revealed to you. And thou, O Vrikodara—what role wilt thou take to find delight in Virata’s realm?' ॥ 4-1-23 ॥
