[य] कथम इन्द्रेण राजेन्द्र सभार्येण महात्मना दुःखं पराप्तं परं घॊरम एतद इच्छामि वेदितुम ॥ ५-९-१ ॥

‘Yudhishthira said, "O foremost of monarchs, I desire to know how it was that the illustrious Indra, together with his queen, had to endure such great and unparalleled misery."’ ॥ 5-9-1 ॥

english translation

[ya] kathama indreNa rAjendra sabhAryeNa mahAtmanA duHkhaM parAptaM paraM ghòrama etada icchAmi vedituma ॥ 5-9-1 ॥

[ष] शृणु राजन पुरावृत्तम इतिहासं पुरातनम सभार्येण यथा पराप्तं दुःखम इद्न्रेण भारत ॥ ५-९-२ ॥

‘Śalya said, "Listen, O king, as I recount this ancient tale of events long past—how, O descendant of Bharata, misery befell Indra and his consort."’ ॥ 5-9-2 ॥

english translation

[Sa] zRNu rAjana purAvRttama itihAsaM purAtanama sabhAryeNa yathA parAptaM duHkhama idnreNa bhArata ॥ 5-9-2 ॥

तवष्टा परजापतिर हय आसीद देव शरेष्ठॊ महातपाः सपुत्रं वै तरिशिरसम इन्द्र दरॊहात किलासृजत ॥ ५-९-३ ॥

‘Once Twashtri, lord of creatures and foremost among the celestials, was engaged in austere penances. It is said that, out of antipathy toward Indra, he created a son with three heads.’ ॥ 5-9-3 ॥

tavaSTA parajApatira haya AsIda deva zareSThò mahAtapAH saputraM vai tarizirasama indra daròhAta kilAsRjata ॥ 5-9-3 ॥

ऐन्द्रं स परार्थयत सथानं विश्वरूपॊ महाद्युतिः तैस तरिभिर वदनैर घॊरैः सूर्येन्दु जवलनॊपमैः ॥ ५-९-४ ॥

‘And that being of universal form, possessed of great splendour, coveted Indra's seat. Endowed with three formidable faces, resembling the sun, the moon, and fire he threatened to overthrow him.’ ॥ 5-9-4 ॥

aindraM sa parArthayata sathAnaM vizvarUpò mahAdyutiH taisa taribhira vadanaira ghòraiH sUryendu javalanòpamaiH ॥ 5-9-4 ॥

वेदान एकेन सॊ ऽधीते सुराम एकेन चापिबत एकेन च दिशः सर्वाः पिबन्न इव निरीक्षते ॥ ५-९-५ ॥

‘He read the Vedas with one mouth, drank wine with the second, and gazed with the third as though he could encompass all the cardinal directions.’ ॥ 5-9-5 ॥

vedAna ekena sò 'dhIte surAma ekena cApibata ekena ca dizaH sarvAH pibanna iva nirIkSate ॥ 5-9-5 ॥
