स तपस्वी मृदुर दान्तॊ धर्मे तपसि चॊद्यतः तपॊ ऽतप्यन महत तीव्रं सुदुश्चरम अरिंदम ॥ ५-९-६ ॥
‘Given to austerities, gentle and self-controlled, he devoted himself to a life of religious practices. Yet his penances, O subduer of foes, were rigid, terrible, and of an exceedingly severe nature.’ ॥ 5-9-6 ॥
english translation
तस्य दृष्टवा तपोवीर्य सत्यं चामिततेजस: । विषादमगमच्छक्र इन्द्रोडयं मा भवेदिति ॥ ५-९-७॥
And beholding the austerities, courage, and truthfulness of this one possessed of immeasurable energy, Indra became anxious, fearing lest that being should take his place.
english translation
कथं सज्जेच्च भोगेषु न च तप्येन्महत् तपः । विवर्धमानस्त्रिशिरा: सर्व हि भुवनं ग्रसेत् ॥ ५-९-८ ॥
(And Indra reflected,) 'How may he be made to addict himself to sensual enjoyments; how may he be made to cease his practice of such rigid austerities?
english translation
इति संचिन्त्य बहुधा बुद्धिमान् भरतर्षभ । आज्ञापयत् सो5प्सरसस्त्वष्टपुत्रप्रलो भने ॥ ५-९-९ ॥
O bull among the Bharata lineage! That intelligent one thought about this in many ways. He then instructed the apsaras to seduce Tvashtra’s son.
english translation
यथा स सज्जेत् त्रिशिरा: कामभोगेषु वै भृशम् । क्षिप्रं कुरुत गच्छध्वं प्रलोभयत मा चिरम् ॥ ५-९-१० ॥
And he commanded them, saying, 'Be quick, and go without delay, and so tempt him that the three-headed being may plunge himself into sensual enjoyment to the utmost extent.'
