[कर्ण] तरयः किलेमे अधना भवन्ति; दासः शिष्यश चास्वतन्त्रा च नारी दासस्य पत्नी तवं धनम अस्य भद्रे; हीनेश्वरा दासधनं च दासी ।। २-६३-१ ।।

sanskrit

'There are said to be three who have no wealth: A slave, a student, and a woman without independence. You, fair lady, are the wife of a slave and thus his property. A slave-woman with no master is the property of a slave.' ।। 2-63-1 ।।

english translation

[karNa] tarayaH kileme adhanA bhavanti; dAsaH ziSyaza cAsvatantrA ca nArI dAsasya patnI tavaM dhanama asya bhadre; hInezvarA dAsadhanaM ca dAsI || 2-63-1 ||

hk transliteration

परविश्य सा नः परिचारैर भजस्व; तत ते कार्यं शिष्टम आवेश्य वेश्म ईशाः सम सर्वे तव राजपुत्रि; भवन्ति ते धार्तराष्ट्रा न पार्थाः ।। २-६३-२ ।।

sanskrit

'You are the wife of a servant who owns nothing independently. Go now to the inner chambers of King Dhritarashtra and attend to the needs of the royal family.' ।। 2-63-2 ।।

english translation

paravizya sA naH paricAraira bhajasva; tata te kAryaM ziSTama Avezya vezma IzAH sama sarve tava rAjaputri; bhavanti te dhArtarASTrA na pArthAH || 2-63-2 ||

hk transliteration

अन्यं वृणीष्व पतिम आशु भामिनि; यस्माद दास्यं न लभसे देवनेन अनवद्या वै पतिषु कामवृत्तिर; नित्यं दास्ये विदितं वै तवास्तु ।। २-६३-३ ।।

sanskrit

'We decree that this is now your proper duty. O princess, all the sons of Dhritarashtra are your masters now, not the sons of Pritha. Choose another husband, one who will not subject you to the indignity of being made a slave through gambling. It is well understood that women, particularly those in servitude, are not blameworthy if they act freely in selecting their husbands.' ।। 2-63-3 ।।

english translation

anyaM vRNISva patima Azu bhAmini; yasmAda dAsyaM na labhase devanena anavadyA vai patiSu kAmavRttira; nityaM dAsye viditaM vai tavAstu || 2-63-3 ||

hk transliteration

पराजितॊ नकुलॊ भीमसेनॊ; युधिष्ठिरः सहदेवॊ ऽरजुनश च दासी भूता परविश याज्ञसेनि; पराजितास ते पतयॊ न सन्ति ।। २-६३-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, let it be as you have been instructed. Nakula, Bhima, Yudhishthira, Sahadeva, and Arjuna have all been defeated. O Yajnaseni, you are now a slave.' ।। 2-63-4 ।।

english translation

parAjitò nakulò bhImasenò; yudhiSThiraH sahadevò 'rajunaza ca dAsI bhUtA paraviza yAjJaseni; parAjitAsa te patayò na santi || 2-63-4 ||

hk transliteration

परयॊजनं चात्मनि किं नु मन्यते; पराक्रमं पौरुषं चेह पार्थः पाञ्चाल्यस्य दरुपदस्यात्मजाम इमां; सभामध्ये यॊ ऽतिदेवीद गलहेषु ।। २-६३-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Your husbands, now reduced to slaves, can no longer be considered your lords. Alas, does the son of Pritha truly value life, valor, and manhood so little that he stakes the daughter of Drupada, the king of Panchala, in this assembly, at the gambling table?' ।। 2-63-5 ।।

english translation

parayòjanaM cAtmani kiM nu manyate; parAkramaM pauruSaM ceha pArthaH pAJcAlyasya darupadasyAtmajAma imAM; sabhAmadhye yò 'tidevIda galaheSu || 2-63-5 ||
