परदीप्य यः परदीप्ताग्निं पराक तवरन नाभिधावति भस्मापि न स विन्देत शिष्टं कव चन भारत ।। २-५७-११ ।।

sanskrit

'One who sets fire to something as highly flammable as camphor will not see its ashes if he rushes to extinguish it. Similarly, a person who recklessly challenges wisdom will never gain true knowledge.' ।। 2-57-11 ।।

english translation

paradIpya yaH paradIptAgniM parAka tavarana nAbhidhAvati bhasmApi na sa vindeta ziSTaM kava cana bhArata || 2-57-11 ||

hk transliteration

न वासयेत पारवर्ग्यं दविषन्तं; विशेषतः कषत्तर अहितं मनुष्यम स यत्रेच्छसि विदुर तत्र गच्छ; सुसान्त्वितापि हय असती सत्री जहाति ।। २-५७-१२ ।।

sanskrit

'Similarly, one should not shelter someone who is an ally of one’s enemies, who harbors jealousy towards one's protector, or who is ill-minded. Therefore, Vidura, go wherever you wish. Even a well-treated wife who is unfaithful will ultimately forsake her husband.' ।। 2-57-12 ।।

english translation

na vAsayeta pAravargyaM daviSantaM; vizeSataH kaSattara ahitaM manuSyama sa yatrecchasi vidura tatra gaccha; susAntvitApi haya asatI satrI jahAti || 2-57-12 ||

hk transliteration

[वि] एतावता ये पुरुषं तयजन्ति; तेषां सख्यम अन्तवद बरूहि राजन राज्ञां हि चित्तानि परिप्लुतानि; सान्त्वं दत्त्वा मुसलैर घातयन्ति ।। २-५७-१३ ।।

sanskrit

'Vidura, addressing Dhritarashtra, said, "O King, impartially share your thoughts on the conduct of those who abandon their servants after giving them instructions. Indeed, the hearts of kings are often very fickle. Initially offering protection, they may ultimately turn against their subjects."' ।। 2-57-13 ।।

english translation

[vi] etAvatA ye puruSaM tayajanti; teSAM sakhyama antavada barUhi rAjana rAjJAM hi cittAni pariplutAni; sAntvaM dattvA musalaira ghAtayanti || 2-57-13 ||

hk transliteration

अबालस तवं मन्यसे राजपुत्र; बालॊ ऽहम इत्य एव सुमन्दबुद्धे यः सौहृदे पुरुषं सथापयित्वा; पश्चाद एनं दूषयते स बालः ।। २-५७-१४ ।।

sanskrit

'O prince, you see yourself as wise and regard me as a child. However, consider this: it is truly childish to first accept someone as a friend and then later find fault with them.' ।। 2-57-14 ।।

english translation

abAlasa tavaM manyase rAjaputra; bAlò 'hama itya eva sumandabuddhe yaH sauhRde puruSaM sathApayitvA; pazcAda enaM dUSayate sa bAlaH || 2-57-14 ||

न शरेयसे नीयते मन्दबुद्धिः; सत्री शरॊत्रियस्येव गृहे परदुष्टा धरुवं न रॊचेद भरतर्षभस्य; पतिः कुमार्या इव षष्टिवर्षः ।। २-५७-१५ ।।

sanskrit

'An evil-hearted person can never be guided to the path of righteousness, just as an unchaste wife remains a problem in the home of a respectable man. Similarly, advice is as unwelcome to this scion of the Bharata dynasty as a young woman’s counsel would be to a man of sixty.' ।। 2-57-15 ।।

english translation

na zareyase nIyate mandabuddhiH; satrI zaròtriyasyeva gRhe paraduSTA dharuvaM na ròceda bharatarSabhasya; patiH kumAryA iva SaSTivarSaH || 2-57-15 ||
