'Duryodhana said, "O Vidura, you constantly boast of the glory of our adversaries while disparaging the sons of Dhritarashtra. We know well your true preferences. You treat us with the contempt one would show to children."' ।। 2-57-1 ।।
सुविज्ञेयः पुरुषॊ ऽनयत्र कामॊ; निन्दा परशंसे हि तथा युनक्ति जिह्वा मनस ते हृदयं निर्व्यनक्ति; जयायॊ निराह मनसः परातिकूल्यम ।। २-५७-२ ।।
'The true nature of a man is revealed when he wishes success for those he favors and defeat for those he does not. His praise and blame are then aligned with these preferences. Thy tongue and mind reveal what is in thy heart, yet the hostility expressed in thy words exceeds even the enmity in thy heart. For one who is adverse to victory, all actions are against him.' ।। 2-57-2 ।।
उत्सङ्गेन वयाल इवाहृतॊ ऽसि; मार्जारवत पॊषकं चॊपहंसि भर्तृघ्नत्वान न हि पापीय आहुस; तस्मात कषत्तः किं न बिभेषि पापात ।। २-५७-३ ।।
'Thou hast been cherished by us like a serpent reared in our lap. Yet, like a cat, thou wishest harm upon those who have nurtured thee. The wise declare that no sin is graver than betraying one’s benefactor. How is it, O Kshatta, that thou dost not fear this sin?' ।। 2-57-3 ।।
'Having achieved great advantages by vanquishing our enemies, you should not speak harshly of us. You always seek peace with our foes, which is why you harbor such animosity towards us.' ।। 2-57-4 ।।
'A person becomes an adversary by uttering unpardonable words, and while praising the enemy, one should not disclose the secrets of one's side. (Thou, however, transgresses this rule). Therefore, O opportunist, why dost thou obstruct us so?' ।। 2-57-5 ।।
