सा हि मांसार्गलं भीष्म मुखात सिंहस्य खादतः दन्तान्तर विलग्नं यत तद आदत्ते ऽलपचेतना ॥ २-४१-२१ ॥

'Possessed of little intelligence, that bird picks at the pieces of flesh stuck between the lion's teeth while the lion is engaged in eating.' ॥ 2-41-21 ॥

english translation

इच्छतः सा हि सिंहस्य भीष्म जीवत्य असंशयम तद्वत तवम अप्य अधर्मज्ञ सदा वाचॊ परभाषसे ॥ २-४१-२२ ॥

'O Bhishma, that bird undoubtedly lives at the will of the lion. Similarly, you too, ignorant of dharma, always speak (such) words.' ॥ 2-41-22 ॥

english translation

इच्छतां पार्थिवेन्द्राणां भीष्म जीवस्य असंशयम लॊकविद्विष्ट कर्मा हि नान्यॊ ऽसति भवता समः ॥ २-४१-२३ ॥

'Indeed, you live solely at the pleasure of these kings. Engaged in actions contrary to the opinions of all, there is none like you!' ॥ 2-41-23 ॥

english translation

[व] ततश चेदिपतेः शरुत्वा भीष्मः सकटुकं वचः उवाचेदं वचॊ राजंश चेदिराजस्य शृण्वतः ॥ २-४१-२४ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued:—Hearing these harsh words from the ruler of Chedi, Bhishma, addressing the Chedi king, said.' ॥ 2-41-24 ॥

english translation

इच्छतां किल नामाहं जीवाम्य एषां महीक्षिताम यॊ ऽहं न गणयाम्य एतांस तृणानीव नराधिपान ॥ २-४१-२५ ॥

'Indeed, I live at the mercy of these earthly rulers, yet I consider these kings to be no more significant than a mere straw.' ॥ 2-41-25 ॥
