एवम उक्ते तु भीष्मेण ततः संचुक्रुधुर नृपाः के चिज जहृषिरे तत्र के चिद भीष्मं जगर्हिरे ।। २-४१-२६ ।।

sanskrit

'As soon as Bhishma spoke these words, the kings were wrathful. The hair of some stood on end, and others began to rebuke Bhishma.' ।। 2-41-26 ।।

english translation

evama ukte tu bhISmeNa tataH saMcukrudhura nRpAH ke cija jahRSire tatra ke cida bhISmaM jagarhire || 2-41-26 ||

hk transliteration

के चिद ऊचुर महेष्वासाः शरुत्वा भीष्मस्य तद वचः पापॊ ऽवलिप्तॊ वृद्धश च नायं भीष्मॊ ऽरहति कषमाम ।। २-४१-२७ ।।

sanskrit

'Hearing Bhishma's words, some skilled archers exclaimed, "This wretched Bhishma, though old, is exceedingly boastful. He does not deserve our pardon."' ।। 2-41-27 ।।

english translation

ke cida Ucura maheSvAsAH zarutvA bhISmasya tada vacaH pApò 'valiptò vRddhaza ca nAyaM bhISmò 'rahati kaSamAma || 2-41-27 ||

hk transliteration

हन्यतां दुर्मतिर भीष्मः पशुवत साध्व अयं नृपैः सर्वैः समेत्य संरब्धैर दह्यतां वा कटाग्निना ।। २-४१-२८ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, kings, as enraged as Bhishma is, let us slay this wretch like an animal, or gather together and burn him in a fire of grass or straw.' ।। 2-41-28 ।।

english translation

hanyatAM durmatira bhISmaH pazuvata sAdhva ayaM nRpaiH sarvaiH sametya saMrabdhaira dahyatAM vA kaTAgninA || 2-41-28 ||

hk transliteration

इति तेषां वचॊ शरुत्वा ततः कुरु पिता महः उवाच मतिमान भीष्मस तान एव वसुधाधिपान ।। २-४१-२९ ।।

sanskrit

'Hearing these words of the monarchs, Bhishma the grand-sire of the Kurus, endued with great intelligence, addressing those lords of earth, said.' ।। 2-41-29 ।।

english translation

iti teSAM vacò zarutvA tataH kuru pitA mahaH uvAca matimAna bhISmasa tAna eva vasudhAdhipAna || 2-41-29 ||

hk transliteration

उक्तस्यॊक्तस्य नेहान्तम अहं समुपलक्षये यत तु वक्ष्यामि तत सर्वं शृणुध्वं वसुधाधिपाः ।। २-४१-३० ।।

sanskrit

'I see no end to our speeches, as words can always be countered with words. Therefore, O lords of the earth, listen to what I have to say.' ।। 2-41-30 ।।

english translation

uktasyòktasya nehAntama ahaM samupalakSaye yata tu vakSyAmi tata sarvaM zRNudhvaM vasudhAdhipAH || 2-41-30 ||
