इष्टं दत्तम अधीतं च यज्ञाश च बहुदक्षिणाः सर्वम एतद अपत्यस्य कलां नार्हति षॊडशीम ॥ २-३८-२६ ॥
'Acts of worship, gifts, study, and sacrifices, even those distinguished by great donations to Brahmanas, are not as meritorious as having a son, which outweighs them all by even one-sixteenth part.' ॥ 2-38-26 ॥
english translation
वरतॊपवासैर बहुभिः कृतं भवति भीष्म यत सर्वं तद अनपत्यस्य मॊघं भवति निश्चयात ॥ २-३८-२७ ॥
'O Bhishma, the merit gained from countless vows and fasts is rendered fruitless for one who is childless.' ॥ 2-38-27 ॥
english translation
सॊ ऽनपत्यश च वृद्धश च मिथ्याधर्मानुशासनात हंसवत तवम अपीदानीं जञातिभ्यः पराप्नुया वधम ॥ २-३८-२८ ॥
'Childless, aged, and a proponent of false morality, you will now meet your end at the hands of your kinsmen, like the swan in the story.' ॥ 2-38-28 ॥
english translation
एवं हि कथयन्त्य अन्ये नरा जञानविदः पुरा भीष्म यत तद अहं सम्यग वक्ष्यामि तव शृण्वतः ॥ २-३८-२९ ॥
'Otherwise, men of old have spoken in this way. O Bhishma, I will now clearly tell you what they have said, so listen attentively.' ॥ 2-38-29 ॥

वृद्धः किल समुद्रान्ते कश चिद धंसॊ ऽभवत पुरा धर्मवाग अन्यथावृत्तः पक्षिणः सॊ ऽनुशास्ति ह ॥ २-३८-३० ॥
'Long ago, there lived an old swan on the sea coast. Though he spoke of morality, his actions were contrary. He used to instruct the other birds.' ॥ 2-38-30 ॥
