धर्मं चरत माधर्मम इति तस्य वचः किल पक्षिणः शुश्रुवुर भीष्म सततं धर्मवादिनः ॥ २-३८-३१ ॥

'"Practice virtue and avoid sin,' were the words that other truthful birds constantly heard him utter, O Bhishma."' ॥ 2-38-31 ॥

english translation

dharmaM carata mAdharmama iti tasya vacaH kila pakSiNaH zuzruvura bhISma satataM dharmavAdinaH ॥ 2-38-31 ॥

अथास्य भक्ष्यम आजह्रुः समुद्रजलचारिणः अण्डजा भीष्म तस्यान्ये धर्मार्थम इति शुश्रुम ॥ २-३८-३२ ॥

'Then, O Bhishma, we have heard that creatures living in the ocean waters brought food for him, while others, born from eggs, did so for the sake of dharma.' ॥ 2-38-32 ॥

english translation

athAsya bhakSyama AjahruH samudrajalacAriNaH aNDajA bhISma tasyAnye dharmArthama iti zuzruma ॥ 2-38-32 ॥

तस्य चैव समभ्याशे निक्षिप्याण्डानि सर्वशः समुद्राम्भस्य अमॊदन्त चरन्तॊ भीष्म पक्षिणः ॥ २-३८-३३ ॥

'O Bhishma, the birds placed their eggs near him and roamed freely in the sea waters, enjoying themselves.' ॥ 2-38-33 ॥

english translation

tasya caiva samabhyAze nikSipyANDAni sarvazaH samudrAmbhasya amòdanta carantò bhISma pakSiNaH ॥ 2-38-33 ॥

तेषाम अण्डानि सर्वेषां भक्षयाम आस पापकृत स हंसः संप्रमत्तानाम अप्रमत्तः सवकर्मणि ॥ २-३८-३४ ॥

'The sinful swan consumed the eggs of all the birds while they were heedlessly enjoying themselves. Although he was attentive to his own actions, he was recklessly devouring their eggs.' ॥ 2-38-34 ॥

teSAma aNDAni sarveSAM bhakSayAma Asa pApakRta sa haMsaH saMpramattAnAma apramattaH savakarmaNi ॥ 2-38-34 ॥

ततः परक्षीयमाणेषु तेष्व अण्डेष्व अण्डजॊ ऽपरः अशङ्कत महाप्राज्ञस तं कदा चिद ददर्श ह ॥ २-३८-३५ ॥

'When the eggs of the birds were dwindling, the wise swan, ever vigilant, observed this situation and noticed it one day.' ॥ 2-38-35 ॥

tataH parakSIyamANeSu teSva aNDeSva aNDajò 'paraH azaGkata mahAprAjJasa taM kadA cida dadarza ha ॥ 2-38-35 ॥
