ततः स कथयाम आस दृष्ट्वा हंसस्य किल्बिषम तेषां परमदुःखार्तः स पक्षी सर्वपक्षिणाम ॥ २-३८-३६ ॥
'Seeing the sinfulness of the swan, the bird, overwhelmed with great sorrow for all the birds, spoke to them about what he had witnessed.' ॥ 2-38-36 ॥
english translation
ततः परत्यक्षतॊ दृष्ट्वा पक्षिणस ते समागताः निजघ्नुस तं तदा हंसं मिथ्यावृत्तं कुरूद्वह ॥ २-३८-३७ ॥
'O best of the Kurus, upon seeing the old swan's treachery with their own eyes, the birds then confronted and killed him.' ॥ 2-38-37 ॥
english translation
ते तवां हंससधर्माणम अपीमे वसुधाधिपाः निहन्युर भीष्म संक्रुद्धाः पक्षिणस तम इवाण्डजम ॥ २-३८-३८ ॥
'O Bhishma, these kings of the earth, enraged, might kill you who are of the nature of a swan, just as birds born from eggs might kill darkness.' ॥ 2-38-38 ॥

गाथाम अप्य अत्र गायन्ति ये पुराणविदॊ जनाः भीष्म यां तां च ते सम्यक कथयिष्यामि भारत ॥ २-३८-३९ ॥
'Those knowledgeable in the Puranas have a saying about such occurrences, which I shall now recount to you in full, O Bharata.' ॥ 2-38-39 ॥

अन्तरात्मनि विनिहिते; रौषि पत्ररथ वितथम अण्डभक्षणम अशुचि ते; कर्म वाचम अतिशयते ॥ २-३८-४० ॥
'O you who uphold virtue with your wings, though your heart is swayed by passion, you preach righteousness. Yet, your sinful act of consuming the eggs reveals the contradiction between your actions and your words.' ॥ 2-38-40 ॥
