संबन्धिसखिश्रोत्रियराजदारवर्जमिति गोणिकापुत्रः ॥ ३१ ॥

आचार्य गोणिकापुत्र बाभ्रव्यीय मत में संशोधन प्रस्तुत करते हुए कहते हैं-यदि पाँच पुरुषों से सम्बन्ध स्थापित कर चुकने वाली स्त्री अपनी सम्बन्धिनी, सखी वेदपाठी और राजा की स्त्री हो, तो उसे अगम्या ही समझना चाहिये ३१ ॥

सहपांसुक्रीडितमुपकारसम्बद्धं समानशीलव्यसनं सहाध्यायिनं यश्चास्य मर्माणि रहस्यानि च विद्यात् यस्य चार्य विद्याद्वा धात्रपत्यं सहसंवृद्धं मित्रम् ॥ ३२ ॥
A bosom friend [snehamitra] may be someone with whom one has played in the sand as a child, someone to whom one has done a service, whose qualities, behavior, and nature are similar to yours, a comrade of schooldays from whom nothing is hidden, someone who has shared the pleasures of adolescence.

स्नेहमित्र-सहायक तीन प्रकार से हो सकते हैं-स्नेह से, गुण से और जाति से इनमें सर्वप्रथम स्नेहमित्रों को कहते हैं जिसके साथ बचपन में धूल में खेले हों, जो उपकार से बँधा हॉ, जो सील और स्वभाव में समान हो, जिसके साथ अध्ययन किया हो, जो सारे रहस्यों से अवगत हो, जिससे कोई रहस्य छिपाया न गया हो, जिसके रहस्यों को नायक जानता हो, जो एक ही धाय की गोद में पले हों, और जो एक ही ग्राम में साथ साथ पले हॉये नौ प्रकार के स्नेहमित्र होते हैं । ॥३२ ॥

पितृपैतामहमविसंवादकमदृष्टवैकृतं वश्यं ध्रुवमलोभशीलमपरिहार्यममन्त्र- विखावीति मित्रसम्पत् ॥ ३३ ॥
One may give one's friendship to a person who has the following qualities: whose family is attached to yours by traditional ties of affection and kinship, with whom one never has quarrels or disagreements, whose nature and behavior are not changeable, with whom there is mutual trust, who is constant and disinterested, who does not frequent bad company, and who knows how to keep secrets.

गुणी मित्र - अब मित्रों के गुणों को कहते हैं जिनके साथ स्नेह-सम्बन्ध पैतृक रूप में चला आ रहा हो, जिसके साथ कभी विवाद न होता हो, जिनके स्वभाव और चरित्र में कोई विकार न देखा गया हो, जो एक-दूसरे के वशीभूत हों, जिन्हें किसी प्रकार का लोभ न हो, जो सदाचार का त्याग न करते हों, और जो रहस्यों को गुप्त रखते हों-इन गुणों से युक्त व्यक्तियों को मित्र बनाना चाहिये ॥ ३३॥

रजकनापितमालाकारगान्धिकसौरिक भिक्षुकगोपालकताम्बूलिकसौवर्णि कपीठमर्दविविदूषकादयो मित्राणि तद्योषिन्मित्राश्च नागरकाः स्युरिति वात्स्यायनः ॥ ३४ ॥
According to Vatsyayana, besides these, townspeople may form friendly relations with all those who might serve as intermediaries or messengers, such as laundrymen, barbers, gardeners, perfumers, goldsmiths, beggars, cowherds, betelsellers, jewelers, managers [pithamarda], gigolos [vita], and jesters [vidushaka]. One should also be friendly with their wives.

जातिमित्र -धोबी, नाई, माली, गन्धी, सौरिक (मदिराविक्रेता), भिक्षुक, ग्वाला, तमोली (पानविक्रेता), सुनार, पीठमर्द, विट, विदूषक आदि नायक और नायिका को मिलाने में मित्र हो सकते हैं। इन धोबी, नाई आदि की स्त्रियों को भी नागरकों को मित्र बनाना चाहिये, क्योंकि सम्बन्ध स्थापित कराने में स्त्रियों अधिक सहायक हो सकती हैं- यह वात्स्यायन का मत है ॥ ३४ ॥

The role of the intermediary [duta] is suited to a man who is well known and esteemed by both parties, particularly by the woman who must trust him.

दूत-कर्म के योग्य जो व्यक्ति नायक और नायिका दोनों के प्रति उदार भाव रखता हो, और विशेषतः नायिका का विश्वासपात्र हो, वही मित्र दूतकर्म के उपयुक्त होता है, अर्थात् उसे ही दूत बनाना चाहिये ॥ ३५ ॥
