देवराजश्चाहल्यामतिबलश्च कीचको द्रौपदीं रावणश्च सीतामपरे चान्ये च बहवो दृश्यन्ते कामवशगा विनष्टा इत्यर्थचिन्तकाः ॥ ३६ ॥
Those that reflect on the consequences of our actions remind us that the king of Heaven was destroyed for being enamored of Ahalya, and so it was too for the most pow¬ erful Kichaka because of Draupadi, and for Ravana be¬ cause of Sita. Many others have been destroyed for letting themselves be possessed by Eros.

देवराज इन्द्र अहल्या के गमन से, महाबली कीचक द्रौपदी की और रावण सीता की कामना में नष्ट हुआ। इनके अतिरिक्त भी अनेक पुरुष काम के वशीभूत होकर नष्ट होते देखे गये हैं- ऐसा अर्थचिन्तकों का कहना है ॥ ३६ ॥

शरीरस्थितिहेतुत्वादाहारसधर्माणो हि कामाः फलभूताश्च धर्मार्थयोः ॥ ३७ ॥
Sexuality is essential for the survival of man, just as food is necessary for bodily health, and on them depend both virtue and wealth.

शरीर की स्थिति का कारण होने से काम भी आहार के समान ही है, और धर्म एवं अर्थ का फलरूप काम ही है ॥ ३७ ॥

बोद्धव्यं तु दोषेष्विव । नहि भिक्षुकाः सन्तीति स्थाल्यो नाधिश्रीयन्ते। नहि मृगाः सन्तीति यवा नोप्यन्त इति वात्स्यायनः ॥३८ ॥
Vatsyayana says, "One must put up with risks. But one does not forgo cooking one's food, fearing that a beggar might come and claim his part, and one does not forgo sowing wheat for fear of wild beasts."
english translation
यदि कामसेवन से दोष उत्पन्न होते हैं, तो उन्हें भी अनादि के दोषों के समान ही समझना चाहिये और उन्हें दूर करने के उपाय करने चाहिये। पर यह बात तर्कसङ्गत नहीं है कि भिक्षुक हैं तो भोजन बनाने के लिये चूल्हा हो न जलाया जाये, और मृग हैं तो जी (अन) ही न बोया जाये ऐसा महर्षि वात्स्यायन का मत है॥ ३८ ॥

भवन्ति चात्र श्लोकाः - एवमर्थं च कामं च धर्मं चोपाचरन्नरः । इहामुत्र च निःशल्यमत्यन्तं सुखमश्नुते ॥ ३९ ॥
It has been said that, "The man accomplished in riches, love, and virtue effortlessly attains the maximum of bliss in this world and the next."
english translation
अनुष्ठान करने का फल इस विषय में प्राचीन लोगों के श्लोक देते हैं- इस प्रकार धर्म, अर्थ और काम की प्राप्ति के लिये प्रयत्नशील मनुष्य इस लोक में और परलोक में निष्कण्टक सुख प्राप्त करता है ॥ ३९ ॥

किं स्यात् परत्रेत्याशङ्का कार्ये यस्मिन्त्र जायते। न चार्थघ्नं सुखं चेति शिष्टास्तत्र व्यवस्थिताः ॥ त्रिवर्गसाधकं यत् स्याद् द्वयोरेकस्य वा पुनः । कार्यं तदपि कुर्वीत न त्वेकार्थ द्विबाधकम् ॥ ४० ॥
Another quotation: "Wise men choose ways of acting that allow them to achieve the three aims of life without letting the pursuit of pleasure lead them to ruin. "Whether one pursues the three aims, or two, or even one, the achievement of one of them must not be prejudicial to the other two."

जिस अर्थ के करने में यह शंका न हो कि परलोक में क्या होगा, और जो सुख अर्थ का नाश न करे, शिष्ट पुरुष उसी के अनुष्ठान में लगते हैं जो कार्य निवर्ग का साधक हो, या दो का अथवा एक का ही साधक हो, उसे करना चाहिये; परन्तु जो धर्म, अर्थ या काम केवल अपना साधक हो तथा शेष दो का विघातक हो, उसे नहीं करना चाहिये ॥ ४० ॥
