अथ मातापित्ररिष्टं सूतिकालस्य लक्षणम्। प्रवक्ष्यामि समासेन सद्यो मरणमेव च॥१॥
I shall now succinctly treat of the evil effects accruing to the parents of a child and also define the characteristics of the time of its birth and (the causes of) its sudden death.

atha mAtApitrariSTaM sUtikAlasya lakSaNam। pravakSyAmi samAsena sadyo maraNameva ca॥1॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptजातस्य पूर्वषट्कस्था ये ग्रहास्ते शुभप्रदाः। ये ग्रहाः परषट्कस्था परोक्षफलदायकाः॥२॥
The planet in the first six houses yield good results (directly to the native) while those in the second half of the zodiac indirect results. (A better interpretation would be only those planets that are in the first six signs yield good results which can be experienced by the native, while those in the other produce good effects which he cannot enjoy directly. He may enjoy in dreams; he may be spoken highly of in his absence etc.)

jAtasya pUrvaSaTkasthA ye grahAste zubhapradAH। ye grahAH paraSaTkasthA parokSaphaladAyakAH॥2॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभानुः पिता च जन्तूनां चन्द्रो माता तथैव च। तयोर्बलाबलं ज्ञात्वा पितृमातृगुणान्वदेत्॥३॥
The Sun and the Moon are the father and the mother respectively of living beings. Hence, one should pronounce the qualities of the parents after ascertaining the strength and weakness of these two luminaries.

bhAnuH pitA ca jantUnAM candro mAtA tathaiva ca। tayorbalAbalaM jJAtvA pitRmAtRguNAnvadet॥3॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपापदृष्टो युतो भानुः पापमध्यगतोऽपि वा। पित्ररिष्टं विजानीयाच्छिशोर्जातस्य निश्चयात्॥४॥
If the Sun be aspected by, conjoined with, or hemmed in between malefics, there will certainly arise trouble (evil effects), it must be understood, to the father of the child born.

pApadRSTo yuto bhAnuH pApamadhyagato'pi vA। pitrariSTaM vijAnIyAcchizorjAtasya nizcayAt॥4॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभानोष्षष्ठाष्टमर्क्षस्थै पापैः सौम्यविवर्जितैः। चतुरश्रगतैर्वाऽपि पित्ररिष्टं समादिशेत्॥५॥
When the 6th and 8th, or the 4th and 8th houses from the Sun are occupied by malefics alone, without the association of benefics, trouble to the father must be declared.
