यत्र स्निग्धा निम्ना सवालुका सानुनादिनी वा स्यात् । तत्र अर्धपञ्चकैर् वारि मानवैः पञ्चभिर्यदि वा ॥ ५४-९१ ॥

For instance, if the spot appears wet or hollow or sandy, or if it be found to resound to the tread of foot, there will be a current at the depth of four and a half or five men.

english translation

yatra snigdhA nimnA savAlukA sAnunAdinI vA syAt । tatra ardhapaJcakair vAri mAnavaiH paJcabhiryadi vA ॥ 54-91 ॥

स्निग्धतरूणां याम्ये नरैश्चतुर्भिर्जलं प्रभूतं च । तरुगहने अपि हि विकृतो यस्तस्मात्तद्वदेव वदेत् ॥ ५४-९२ ॥

There are undercurrents (dakārgala) containing an abundant supply of water to the south of trees of luxuriant growth and at the depth of four men. In places full of trees, if the ground should present any unusual appearance, the existence of the current may be determined as stated above.

snigdhatarUNAM yAmye naraizcaturbhirjalaM prabhUtaM ca । tarugahane api hi vikRto yastasmAttadvadeva vadet ॥ 54-92 ॥

नमते यत्र धरित्री सार्धे पुरुषे अम्बु जाङ्गलानूपे । कीटा वा यत्र विनाआलयेन बहवो अम्बु तत्रापि ॥ ५४-९३ ॥

In dry but fertile lands as well as in wet lands, if the ground be found to sink under the foot, there will be a current at the depth of a man and a half; and if while there are no houses in the neighbourhood, worms are seen in large quantities, there will be an undercurrent at the spot.

namate yatra dharitrI sArdhe puruSe ambu jAGgalAnUpe । kITA vA yatra vinAAlayena bahavo ambu tatrApi ॥ 54-93 ॥

उष्णा शीता च मही शीतौष्णाम्भस्त्रिभिर्नरैः सार्धैः । इन्द्रधनुर्मत्स्यो वा वल्मीको वा चतुर्हस्तात् ॥ ५४-९४ ॥

If the ground be felt both hot and cold, there will be hot and cold currents at the spot at a depth of three men and a half; and if a rainbow, a fish or an ant-hill be seen at the spot, there will be a current at the distance of four cubits from them and at a depth of three men and a half.

uSNA zItA ca mahI zItauSNAmbhastribhirnaraiH sArdhaiH । indradhanurmatsyo vA valmIko vA caturhastAt ॥ 54-94 ॥

वल्मीकानां पङ्क्त्यां यद्येको अभ्युच्छ्रितः शिरा तदधः । शुष्यति न रोहते वा सस्यं यस्यां च तत्राम्भः ॥ ५४-९५ ॥

If, of a number of ant-hills about a spot, one be seen above the rest, there will be a current under it, and there will also be currents in places where crops do not grow.

valmIkAnAM paGktyAM yadyeko abhyucchritaH zirA tadadhaH । zuSyati na rohate vA sasyaM yasyAM ca tatrAmbhaH ॥ 54-95 ॥
