न्यग्रोधपलाशौदुम्बरैः समेतैस्त्रिभिर्जलं तदधः । वटपिप्पलसमवाये तद्वद्वाच्यं शिरा चौदक् ॥ ५४-९६ ॥

If the Banyan, the Palāśa and the Udumbara trees be seen to grow together, there will be a current under them. If the Banyan and the Pippala trees be seen to grow together, there will be a current to the north of the trees.

nyagrodhapalAzaudumbaraiH sametaistribhirjalaM tadadhaH । vaTapippalasamavAye tadvadvAcyaM zirA caudak ॥ 54-96 ॥

आग्नेये यदि कोणे ग्रामस्य पुरस्य वा भवेत् कूपः । नित्यं स करोति भयं दाहं च समानुषं प्रायः ॥ ५४-९७ ॥

If a well be situated to the south-east of a village or a town, there will be much suffering from various fears and from thirst.

english translation

Agneye yadi koNe grAmasya purasya vA bhavet kUpaH । nityaM sa karoti bhayaM dAhaM ca samAnuSaM prAyaH ॥ 54-97 ॥

नैरृतकोणे बालक्षयं च वनिताभयं वायव्ये । दिक्त्रयं एतत्त्यक्त्वा शेषासु शुभऽवहाः कूपाः ॥ ५४-९८ ॥

If the well be situated in the south-western quarter, children will perish. If in the north-west, women will suffer. Wells situated in the north-east will conduce to prosperity.

nairRtakoNe bAlakSayaM ca vanitAbhayaM vAyavye । diktrayaM etattyaktvA zeSAsu zubha'vahAH kUpAH ॥ 54-98 ॥

सारस्वतेन मुनिना दकार्गलं यत्क्र्तं तदवलोक्य । आर्याभिः कृतं एतद्वृत्तैरपि मानवं वक्ष्ये ॥ ५४-९९ ॥

I have thus stated in the Āryā metre the views of the Sage Sārasvata on the subject of undercurrents. I shall now proceed to state the views of Manu on the same subject.

sArasvatena muninA dakArgalaM yatkrtaM tadavalokya । AryAbhiH kRtaM etadvRttairapi mAnavaM vakSye ॥ 54-99 ॥

स्निग्धा यतः पादपगुल्मवल्ल्यो निश्छिद्रपत्राश्च ततः शिराअस्ति । पद्मक्षुरौशीरकुलाः सगुण्ड्राः काशाः कुशा वा नलिका नलो वा ॥ ५४-१०० ॥

Wherever trees, shrubs and creepers are seen to grow luxuriantly, with glossy and uninjured leaves, there are undercurrents; and there are also undercurrents in places where the Padma, Kṣura, Uśīra, Kulā, Guṇḍrā, Kāśā, Kuśā, and Nalikā are seen to grow.

snigdhA yataH pAdapagulmavallyo nizchidrapatrAzca tataH zirAasti । padmakSurauzIrakulAH saguNDrAH kAzAH kuzA vA nalikA nalo vA ॥ 54-100 ॥
