धर्म्यं यशस्यं च वदाम्यतो अहं दकार्गलं येन जलौपलब्धिः । पुंसां यथाअङ्गेषु शिरास्तथएव क्षितावपि प्रोन्नतनिम्नसंस्थाः ॥ ५४-०१ ॥

We shall now proceed to treat of the science of undercurrents (dakārgala) by which man may get at water and observe the duties of life and be happy. Just in the same way as there are arteries for the circulation of blood in human bodies, there are water courses running in all directions above and below within the Earth.

dharmyaM yazasyaM ca vadAmyato ahaM dakArgalaM yena jalaupalabdhiH । puMsAM yathAaGgeSu zirAstathaeva kSitAvapi pronnatanimnasaMsthAH ॥ 54-01 ॥

एकेन वर्णेन रसेन चाम्भश्च्युतं नभस्तो वसुधाविशेषात् । नानारसत्वं बहुवर्णतां च गतं परीक्ष्यं क्षितितुल्यं एव ॥ ५४-०२ ॥

Water that falls from the clouds is of one colour and one flavour; after contact with the Earth, both the colour and the flavour vary with those of the ground through which it flows. This will be found to be the case on actual examination.

ekena varNena rasena cAmbhazcyutaM nabhasto vasudhAvizeSAt । nAnArasatvaM bahuvarNatAM ca gataM parIkSyaM kSititulyaM eva ॥ 54-02 ॥

पुरुहूतानलयमनिरृतिवरुणपवनैन्दुशङ्करा देवाः । विज्ञातव्याः क्रमशः प्राच्यऽद्यानां दिशां पतयः ॥ ५४-०३ ॥

The lords of the eight quarters of the horizon beginning from the east and going round from left to right are—Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirṛti, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Soma and Īsāna.

दिक्पतिसंज्ञा च शिरा नवमी मध्ये महाशिरानाम्नी । एताभ्यो अन्याः शतशो विनिःसृता नामभिः प्रथिताः ॥ ५४-०४ ॥

There are eight currents bearing the same names as those of the eight Dikpatis (lords) above enumerated, and there is a big current in the centre known as Mahāśirā. Besides these there are hundreds of well-known minor currents bearing distinct names.

dikpatisaMjJA ca zirA navamI madhye mahAzirAnAmnI । etAbhyo anyAH zatazo viniHsRtA nAmabhiH prathitAH ॥ 54-04 ॥

पातालाद् ऊर्ध्वशिरा शुभा चतुर्दिक्षु संस्थिता याश्च । कोणदिगुत्था न शुभाः शिरानिमित्तान्यतो वक्ष्ये ॥ ५४-०५ ॥

There are four currents issuing from the centre of the Earth and reaching the east, south, west and north. These are good currents. There are four other currents running towards the north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west. These produce evil. We shall now proceed to state the several indications leading to the discovery of undercurrents.
