मरुदेशे यच्चिह्नं न जाङ्गले तैर्जलं विनिर्देश्यम् । जम्बूवेतस पूर्वैर् ये पुरुषास्ते मरौ द्विगुणाः ॥ ५४-८६ ॥

It would be wrong to proceed to judge of undercurrents in dry but fertile lands from the several indications given for arid lands. As regards the Jambū and the Vetasā, the depths of undercurrents given for these trees shall be doubled if the trees are seen to grow in arid lands.

marudeze yaccihnaM na jAGgale tairjalaM vinirdezyam । jambUvetasa pUrvair ye puruSAste marau dviguNAH ॥ 54-86 ॥

जम्बूस्त्रिवृता मौर्वी शिशुमारी सारिवा शिवा श्यामा । वीरुधयो वाराही ज्योतिष्मती गरुडवेगा च ॥ ५४-८७ ॥

Jambu, Trivrata, Maurvi, Shishumari, Sariva, Shiva, Shyama. The two trees are Vārāhī, Jyotiṣmatī and Garuḍavega.

jambUstrivRtA maurvI zizumArI sArivA zivA zyAmA । vIrudhayo vArAhI jyotiSmatI garuDavegA ca ॥ 54-87 ॥

सूकरिकमाषपर्णीव्याघ्रपदाश्चैति यद्यहेर्निलये । वल्मीकादुत्तरतस्त्रिभिः करैस्त्रिपुरुषे तोयम् ॥ ५४-८८ ॥

If the snake’s nest is full of pigs, meat, leaves, tigers and footprints, From the anthill, the water is poured into the three persons with three hands.

english translation

sUkarikamASaparNIvyAghrapadAzcaiti yadyahernilaye । valmIkAduttaratastribhiH karaistripuruSe toyam ॥ 54-88 ॥

एतदनूपे वाच्यं जाङ्गलभूमौ तु पञ्चभिः पुरुषैः । एतैरेव निमित्तैर्मरुदेशे सप्तभिः कथयेत् ॥ ५४-८९ ॥

The above apply to purely wet lands. But if the trees are seen to grow in dry but fertile lands, the depth of undercurrents will be five men and in arid lands the depth will be seven men.

etadanUpe vAcyaM jAGgalabhUmau tu paJcabhiH puruSaiH । etaireva nimittairmarudeze saptabhiH kathayet ॥ 54-89 ॥

एकनिभा यत्र मही तृणतरुवल्मीकगुल्मपरिहीना । तस्यां यत्र विकारो भवति धरित्र्यां जलं तत्र ॥ ५४-९० ॥

In the case of lands in which neither trees nor plants are seen to grow, in which no ant-hills are found to grow, and which present a smooth and even appearance, there will be undercurrents in those spots where the appearance of the soil is of an unusual nature.

ekanibhA yatra mahI tRNataruvalmIkagulmaparihInA । tasyAM yatra vikAro bhavati dharitryAM jalaM tatra ॥ 54-90 ॥
