ग्रन्थिप्रचुरा यस्मिन्शमी भवेदुत्तरेण वल्मीकः । पश्चात्पञ्चकरान्ते शतार्धसंख्यैर्नरैः सलिलम् ॥ ५४-८१ ॥

If the Śamī is found covered with knots and an ant-hill be seen to the north of it, there will be a current at the distance of five cubits to the west of the hill and at a depth of fifty men.

granthipracurA yasminzamI bhaveduttareNa valmIkaH । pazcAtpaJcakarAnte zatArdhasaMkhyairnaraiH salilam ॥ 54-81 ॥

एकस्थाः पञ्च यदा वल्मीका मध्यमो भवेत्श्वेतः । तस्मिन्शिरा प्रदिष्टा नरषष्ट्या पञ्चवर्जितया ॥ ५४-८२ ॥

If of several ant-hills in a spot, the central one be white, there will be a current at the spot at the depth of fifty-five men.

सपलाशा यत्र शमी पश्चिमभागे अम्बु मानवैः षष्ट्या । अर्धनरे अहिः प्रथमं सवालुका पीतमृत्परतः ॥ ५४-८३ ॥

If the Palāśa tree be seen to grow with the Śamī tree, there will be a current to the west of the trees at the depth of sixty men. In digging, there will be seen a snake at the depth of half a man and below it there will be yellow soil mixed with sand.

sapalAzA yatra zamI pazcimabhAge ambu mAnavaiH SaSTyA । ardhanare ahiH prathamaM savAlukA pItamRtparataH ॥ 54-83 ॥

वल्मीकेन परिवृतः श्वेतो रोहीतको भवेद्यस्मिन् । पूर्वेण हस्तमात्रे सप्तत्या मानवैरम्बु ॥ ५४-८४ ॥

If the white Rohītaka tree be seen surrounded by ant-hills, there will be a current at the distance of a cubit to the west of the tree and at the depth of seventy men.

श्वेता कण्टकबहुला यत्र शमी दक्षिणेन तत्र पयः । नरपञ्चकसंयुतया सप्तत्याअहिर्नरार्धे च ॥ ५४-८५ ॥

If the Śamī be seen white and full of thorns, there will be a current to the south of the tree at a depth of seventy-five men. In digging there will be found a snake at the depth of half a man.
