Apasmara (epilepsy) is characterized by the loss or destruction of memory. It arises from the severe disturbance or affliction of intellect (dhi) and mind/consciousness (sattva), occurring when the mind (chitta) is struck or overwhelmed by excessive worry, grief, fear, and similar emotional factors.

english translation

Just as in insanity (unmada), the bodily wastes/vitiated doshas (malas) located in the mind and body become severely aggravated. They overwhelm the mind, occupy the heart (the seat of consciousness), and spread into the channels that carry consciousness (sanjnavaha srotas).

english translation

The patient then enters into a state of darkness (loses consciousness), becomes completely stupefied in intellect, and performs terrifying or repulsive actions. These include grinding or gnashing the teeth, foaming or frothing at the mouth, and violently throwing or thrashing the hands and feet (convulsions).

english translation

He perceives non-existent shapes and objects, stumbles, and falls flat onto the ground, with his eyes and eyebrows becoming distorted or irregular. Once the intense paroxysm or bout of the doshas passes away, he regains full awareness and wakes up.

english translation

After an interval of time (periodically), he again exhibits and undergoes the exact same abnormal movements and convulsive behaviors. Epilepsy is of four kinds; by Vata etc. (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) separately and by the combination of all the three Doshas (Sannipata)
