स्नेहमार्दवकृत् स्निग्धो बलवर्णकरस्तथा | रूक्षस्तद्विपरीतः स्याद्विशेषात् स्तम्भनः खरः ||५१६||

A substance that imparts oiliness, softness, and strength, and improves complexion, is considered to be oily and smooth. Conversely, a substance with the opposite characteristics—dry, rough, and hard—is known for its astringent and rough qualities.

A substance that is sticky, nourishing, and strengthening, promotes healing and is heavy in nature. It is also pure. Its opposite characteristics are found in substances that are dry, astringent, and corrosive.
