In this context: Purgative (Virechana) Drugs: These substances are primarily endowed with the qualities of earth (Prithvi) and water (Apā). Due to their heaviness (gurutva), they tend to move downward. Hence, purgatives are characterized by properties that are predominantly downward in nature. Emetic (Vamana) Drugs: These substances are chiefly endowed with the qualities of fire (Agni) and air (Vāyu). Fire and air are light (laghu), and therefore, emetic drugs naturally rise upward. Consequently, emetics are characterized by properties that are predominantly upward in nature. Drugs with Both Properties: Some drugs possess both upward and downward qualities. Drugs with Sky (Ākāśa) Qualities: These substances provide relief and balance, as they are primarily characterized by the properties of space (Ākāśa). Appetizers (Dīpanā): These are substances with qualities related to fire (Agni), and thus, they stimulate digestion and are similar in effect to the qualities of fire. Liquefacients (Lekhana): These substances have properties related to both air (Vāyu) and fire (Agni). Restoratives (Vṛṁhāṇa): These substances are endowed with qualities of earth (Prithvi) and water (Apā), helping to increase strength and nourishment. Based on these characteristics, the therapeutic actions of medicines can be inferred.
