द्विविधास्तु व्याधयः- शस्त्रसाध्याः, स्नेहादिक्रियासाध्याश्च | तत्र शस्त्रसाध्येषु स्नेहादिक्रिया न प्रतिषिध्यते, स्नेहादिक्रियासाध्येषु शस्त्रकर्म न क्रियते ||३||

Diseases are classified into two broad categories: Surgical and Medical. Surgical diseases can be treated with surgery, while Medical diseases are managed with treatments like purgatives, emetics, oils, diaphoretics, and unguents. In surgical diseases, the use of medicated oils and unguents is not prohibited, whereas, in medical diseases, surgical intervention is not applicable.

In this text, a general outline of all diseases is provided, as previously mentioned: "The cause of diseases is the union of suffering" (Sutra 1). This suffering is categorized into three types: Adhyatmika (physical), Adhibhautika (environmental), and Adhidaivika (divine). These, in turn, lead to seven kinds of diseases: Adi-bala-pravritta (inherited from parents) Janma-bala-pravritta (congenital or from maternal influence) Dosha-bala-pravritta (arising from the derangement of bodily humours) Sanghata-bala-pravritta (resulting from trauma) Kala-bala-pravritta (due to seasonal changes) Daiva-bala-pravritta (resulting from divine intervention or curses) Svabhava-bala-pravritta (natural or spontaneous)

Here, diseases are classified based on their origin: Adi-bala-pravritta (Inherited) Diseases: These include conditions like leprosy and hemorrhoids, which are further divided into two types: Maatruja: Arising from maternal factors. Pitrja: Arising from paternal factors. Janma-bala-pravritta (Congenital) Diseases: These result from maternal misconduct during pregnancy and include conditions such as blindness, deafness, or congenital deformities. They are also divided into two types: Rasa-krita: Resulting from derangement of the lymph-chyle. Dauhridya: Resulting from unfulfilled desires or misconduct of the mother during pregnancy. Dosha-bala-pravritta (Idiopathic) Diseases: These arise from the derangement of bodily humours due to improper diet or behavior. They are classified into: Amashaya-samutthita: Originating in the stomach. Pakvashaya-samutthita: Originating in the intestines. Each type can be further divided into: Shariira (Physical): Physical manifestations of the disease. Manasa (Mental): Psychological effects of the disease. These types fall under the category of Adhyatmika (physical) diseases.
