हन्यतां हन्यतां पाप इति षष्टिसहस्रिणः । उदायुधा अभिययुरुन्मिमेष तदा मुनिः ।। ९-८-११ ।।

sanskrit

Certainly he is very sinful. Kill him! Kill him!” Shouting like this, the sons of Sagara, sixty thousand all together, raised their weapons. When they approached the sage, the sage opened His eyes. ।। 9-8-11 ।।

english translation

यह निश्चय ही बड़ा पापी है। इसे मारो, मारो।” इस प्रकार चिल्लाते हुए सगर के साठ हजार पुत्रों ने एकसाथ अपने हथियार उठा लिये। जब वे मुनि के निकट पहुँचे तो मुनि ने अपनी आँखें खोलीं। ।। ९-८-११ ।।

स्वशरीराग्निना तावन्महेन्द्रहृतचेतसः । महद्व्यतिक्रमहता भस्मसादभवन् क्षणात् ।। ९-८-१२ ।।

sanskrit

By the influence of Indra, the King of heaven, the sons of Sagara had lost their intelligence and disrespected a great personality. Consequently, fire emanated from their own bodies, and they were immediately burned to ashes. ।। 9-8-12 ।।

english translation

स्वर्ग के राजा इन्द्र के प्रभाव से सगर के पुत्रों की बुद्धि मारी गई जिससे उन्होंने एक महापुरुष का अपमान कर दिया। फलस्वरूप उनके शरीरों से अग्नि निकलने लगी और वे तुरन्त जलकर राख हो गये। ।। ९-८-१२ ।।

न साधुवादो मुनिकोपभर्जिता नृपेन्द्रपुत्रा इति सत्त्वधामनि । कथं तमो रोषमयं विभाव्यते जगत्पवित्रात्मनि खे रजो भुवः ।। ९-८-१३ ।।

It is sometimes argued that the sons of King Sagara were burned to ashes by the fire emanating from the eyes of Kapila Muni. This statement, however, is not approved by great learned persons, for Kapila Muni’s body is completely in the mode of goodness and therefore cannot manifest the mode of ignorance in the form of anger, just as the pure sky cannot be polluted by the dust of the earth. ।। 9-8-13 ।।

english translation

कभी-कभी यह तर्क दिया जाता है कि राजा सगर के सारे पुत्र कपिल मुनि की आँखों से निकली अग्नि से भस्मसात् हुए थे। लेकिन विद्वान पुरुष इस मत की पुष्टि नहीं करते क्योंकि कपिल मुनि का शरीर नितान्त सात्विक था अतएव उससे क्रोध के रूप में तमोगुण प्रकट नहीं हो सकता जिस तरह निर्मल आकाश को पृथ्वी की धूल दूषित नहीं कर सकती। ।। ९-८-१३ ।।

na sAdhuvAdo munikopabharjitA nRpendraputrA iti sattvadhAmani | kathaM tamo roSamayaM vibhAvyate jagatpavitrAtmani khe rajo bhuvaH || 9-8-13 ||

यस्येरिता साङ्ख्यमयी दृढेह नौर्यया मुमुक्षुस्तरते दुरत्ययम् । भवार्णवं मृत्युपथं विपश्चितः परात्मभूतस्य कथं पृथङ्मतिः ।। ९-८-१४ ।।

Kapila Muni enunciated in this material world the Sāṅkhya philosophy, which is a strong boat with which to cross over the ocean of nescience. Indeed, a person eager to cross the ocean of the material world may take shelter of this philosophy. In such a greatly learned person, situated on the elevated platform of transcendence, how can there be any distinction between enemy and friend? ।। 9-8-14 ।।

english translation

कपिल मुनि ने इस जगत में सांख्य दर्शन का प्रवर्तन किया जो अज्ञानरूपी सागर को पार करने के लिए दृढ़ नाव है। निस्सन्देह, भवसागर को पार करने के इच्छुक व्यक्ति को इस दर्शन का आश्रय ग्रहण करना चाहिए। ऐसे महापुरुष में, जो अध्यात्म के उच्चपद को प्राप्त हो, एक मित्र तथा शत्रु में कोई अन्तर कैसे हो सकता है? ।। ९-८-१४ ।।

योऽसमञ्जस इत्युक्तः स केशिन्या नृपात्मजः । तस्य पुत्रोंऽशुमान् नाम पितामहहिते रतः ।। ९-८-१५ ।।

Among the sons of Sagara Mahārāja was one named Asamañjasa, who was born from the King’s second wife, Keśinī. The son of Asamañjasa was known as Aṁśumān, and he was always engaged in working for the good of Sagara Mahārāja, his grandfather. ।। 9-8-15 ।।

english translation

महाराज सगर के पुत्रों में एक का नाम असमंजस था जो राजा की दूसरी पत्नी केशिनी के गर्भ से उत्पन्न हुआ था। असंमजस का पुत्र अंशुमान था और वह अपने बाबा सगर महाराज के कल्याण- कार्य में सदैव लगा रहता था। ।। ९-८-१५ ।।

yo'samaJjasa ityuktaH sa kezinyA nRpAtmajaH | tasya putroM'zumAn nAma pitAmahahite rataH || 9-8-15 ||
