श्रीशुक उवाच हरितो रोहितसुतश्चम्पस्तस्माद्विनिर्मिता । चम्पापुरी सुदेवोऽतो विजयो यस्य चात्मजः ।। ९-८-१ ।।

sanskrit

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: The son of Rohita was Harita, and Harita’s son was Campa, who constructed the town of Campāpurī. The son of Campa was Sudeva, and his son was Vijaya. ।। 9-8-1 ।।

english translation

शुकदेव गोस्वामी ने आगे कहा : रोहित का पुत्र हरित हुआ और हरित का पुत्र चम्प हुआ जिसने चम्पापुरी नामक नगर का निर्माण कराया। चम्प का पुत्र सुदेव हुआ और सुदेव का पुत्र विजय था। ।। ९-८-१ ।।

भरुकस्तत्सुतस्तस्माद्वृकस्तस्यापि बाहुकः । सोऽरिभिर्हृतभू राजा सभार्यो वनमाविशत् ।। ९-८-२ ।।

sanskrit

The son of Vijaya was Bharuka, Bharuka’s son was Vṛka, and Vṛka’s son was Bāhuka. The enemies of King Bāhuka took away all his possessions, and therefore the King entered the order of vānaprastha and went to the forest with his wife. ।। 9-8-2 ‌।।

english translation

विजय का पुत्र भरुक, भरुक का पुत्र वृक और उसका पुत्र बाहुक हुआ। राजा बाहुक के शत्रुओं ने उसकी सारी सम्पत्ति छीन ली जिससे उसने वानप्रस्थ आश्रम ग्रहण कर लिया और अपनी पत्नी सहित वन में चला गया। ।। ९-८-२ ।।

वृद्धं तं पञ्चतां प्राप्तं महिष्यनुमरिष्यती । और्वेण जानताऽऽत्मानं प्रजावन्तं निवारिता ।। ९-८-३ ।।

sanskrit

Bāhuka died when he was old, and one of his wives wanted to die with him, following the satī rite. At that time, however, Aurva Muni, knowing her to be pregnant, forbade her to die. ।। 9-8-3 ।।

english translation

जब बाहुक वृद्ध होकर मर गया तो उसकी एक पत्नी उसके साथ सती होना चाहती थी। किन्तु उस समय और्व मुनि ने यह जानते हुए कि वह गर्भवती है उसे सती होने से मना किया। ।। ९-८-३ ।।

आज्ञायास्यै सपत्नीभिर्गरो दत्तोऽन्धसा सह । सह तेनैव सञ्जातः सगराख्यो महायशाः ।। ९-८-४ ।।

sanskrit

Knowing that she was pregnant, the co-wives of the wife of Bāhuka conspired to give her poison with her food, but it did not act. Instead, the son was born along with the poison. Therefore he became famous as Sagara [“one who is born with poison”]. Sagara later became the emperor. ।। 9-8-4 ।।

english translation

यह जानते हुए कि वह गर्भवती थी, उसकी सौतों ने उसको भोजन के साथ विष देने की मंत्रणा की लेकिन यह फलीभूत नहीं हुई। किन्तु इस विष सहित एक पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ जो सगर (विष सहित) कहलाया। बाद में सगर सम्राट बना। ।। ९-८-४ ।।

AjJAyAsyai sapatnIbhirgaro datto'ndhasA saha | saha tenaiva saJjAtaH sagarAkhyo mahAyazAH || 9-8-4 ||

सगरश्चक्रवर्त्यासीत्सागरो यत्सुतैः कृतः । यस्तालजङ्घान् यवनाञ्छकान् हैहयबर्बरान् ।। ९-८-५ ।।

sanskrit

The place known as Gaṅgāsāgara was excavated by his sons. Sagara Mahārāja, following the order of his spiritual master, Aurva, did not kill the uncivilized men like the Tālajaṅghas, Yavanas, Śakas, Haihayas and Barbaras. ।। 9-8-5 ।।

english translation

गंगासागर नामक स्थान उसके पुत्रों द्वारा खोदा गया था। सगर महाराज ने अपने गुरु और्व के आदेशानुसार तालजंघ, यवन, शक, हैहय तथा बर्बर जातियों के असभ्य लोगों का वध नहीं किया ।। ९-८-५ ।।
