नावधीद्गुरुवाक्येन चक्रे विकृतवेषिणः । मुण्डान् श्मश्रुधरान् कांश्चिन्मुक्तकेशार्धमुण्डितान् ॥ ९-८-६ ॥
Instead, some of them he made dress awkwardly, some of them he shaved clean but allowed to wear mustaches, some of them he left wearing loose hair, some he half shaved, some he left without underwear, and some without external garments. ॥ 9-8-6 ॥

अपितु उनमें से कुछ को भद्दे वस्त्र पहनने को बाध्य कर दिया, कुछ के सिर घुटवा दिये लेकिन मूँछें रखने दीं, कुछ के बालों को खुलवा दिया, कुछ के सिर आधे घुटवा दिए, कुछ को बिना भीतरी वस्त्र के कर दिया और कुछ को निर्वस्त्र करा दिया। ॥ ९-८-६ ॥

अनन्तर्वाससः कांश्चिदबहिर्वाससोऽपरान् । सोऽश्वमेधैरयजत सर्ववेदसुरात्मकम् ॥ ९-८-७ ॥
Thus these different clans were made to dress differently, but King Sagara did not kill them. Following the instructions of the great sage Aurva, Sagara Mahārāja performed aśvamedha sacrifices and thus satisfied the Supreme Lord, who is the supreme controller, the Supersoul of all learned scholars, ॥ 9-8-7 ॥

इस प्रकार ये जातियाँ भिन्न-भिन्न वस्त्र धारण करने के लिए बाध्य की गईं, किन्तु राजा सगर ने इन्हें मारा नहीं। और्व मुनि के आदेशानुसार सगर महाराज ने अश्वमेध यज्ञ सम्पन्न किया और इस तरह भगवान् को प्रसन्न किया जो परम नियन्ता, समस्त विद्वानों के परमात्मा ॥ ९-८-७ ॥

और्वोपदिष्टयोगेन हरिमात्मानमीश्वरम् । तस्योत्सृष्टं पशुं यज्ञे जहाराश्वं पुरन्दरः ॥ ९-८-८ ॥
And the knower of all Vedic knowledge, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But Indra, the King of heaven, stole the horse meant to be offered at the sacrifice. ॥ 9-8-8 ॥

तथा सभी वेदों के ज्ञाता हैं। किन्तु स्वर्ग के राजा इन्द्र ने यज्ञ में बलि दिये जाने वाले घोड़े को चुरा लिया। ॥ ९-८-८ ॥

सुमत्यास्तनया दृप्ताः पितुरादेशकारिणः । हयमन्वेषमाणास्ते समन्तान्न्यखनन् महीम् ॥ ९-८-९ ॥
[King Sagara had two wives, Sumati and Keśinī.] The sons of Sumati, who were very proud of their prowess and influence, following the order of their father, searched for the lost horse. While doing so, they dug into the earth very extensively. ॥ 9-8-9 ॥

(राजा सगर के दो पत्नियाँ थीं—सुमति तथा केशिनी)। सुमति के पुत्रों ने, जिन्हें अपने पराक्रम तथा प्रभाव पर गर्व था, अपने पिता के आदेशानुसार खोये हुए घोड़े को सर्वत्र ढूँढा। ऐसा करते हुए उन्होंने पृथ्वी को बहुत दूर तक खोद डाला। ॥ ९-८-९ ॥

Thereafter, in the northeastern direction, they saw the horse near the āśrama of Kapila Muni. “Here is the man who has stolen the horse,” they said. “He is staying there with closed eyes. ॥ 9-8-10 ॥

तत्पश्चात् जब उन्होंने उत्तरपूर्व दिशा में कपिल मुनि के आश्रम के निकट घोड़े को देखा तो वे बोल उठे “यह रहा घोड़ाचोर! यह आँखें बन्द किये बैठा है। ॥ ९-८-१० ॥
