विप्लावितं स्वशिबिरं प्रतिस्रोतःसरिज्जलैः । नामृष्यत्तस्य तद्वीर्यं वीरमानी दशाननः ॥ ९-१५-२१ ॥
Because Kārtavīryārjuna made the water flow in the opposite direction, the camp of Rāvaṇa, which was set up on the bank of the Narmadā near the city of Māhiṣmatī, was inundated. This was unbearable to the ten-headed Rāvaṇa, who considered himself a great hero and could not tolerate Kārtavīryārjuna’s power. ॥ 9-15-21 ॥

चूँकि कार्तवीर्यार्जुन ने जलप्रवाह की दिशा पलट दी थी अत: नर्मदा नदी के तट पर महिष्मती नगर के निकट रावण का लगा खेमा जलमग्न हो गया। यह दससिरों वाले रावण के लिए असह्य हो उठा क्योंकि वह अपने को महान् वीर मानता था और वह कार्तवीर्यार्जुन के बल को सहन नहीं कर सका। ॥ ९-१५-२१ ॥

गृहीतो लीलया स्त्रीणां समक्षं कृतकिल्बिषः । माहिष्मत्यां सन्निरुद्धो मुक्तो येन कपिर्यथा ॥ ९-१५-२२ ॥
When Rāvaṇa attempted to insult Kārtavīryārjuna in the presence of the women and thus offended him, Kārtavīryārjuna easily arrested Rāvaṇa and put him in custody in the city of Māhiṣmatī, just as one captures a monkey, and then released him neglectfully. ॥ 9-15-22 ॥

जब रावण ने स्त्रियों के समक्ष कार्तवीर्यार्जुन का अपमान करना चाहा और उसे नाराज कर दिया तो उसने रावण को खेल-खेल में उसी प्रकार बन्दी बनाकर माहिष्मती नगर के कारागार में डाल दिया जिस प्रकार कोई बन्दर को पकड़ ले। बाद में उसने परवाह किए बिना उसे मुक्त कर दिया। ॥ ९-१५-२२ ॥

Once while Kārtavīryārjuna was wandering unengaged in a solitary forest and hunting, he approached the residence of Jamadagni. ॥ 9-15-23 ॥

एक बार जब कार्तवीर्यार्जुन बिना किसी कार्यक्रम के एकान्त जंगल में घूमकर शिकार कर रहा था तो वह जमदग्नि के निवास के निकट पहुँचा। ॥ ९-१५-२३ ॥

तस्मै स नरदेवाय मुनिरर्हणमाहरत् । ससैन्यामात्यवाहाय हविष्मत्या तपोधनः ॥ ९-१५-२४ ॥
The sage Jamadagni, who was engaged in great austerities in the forest, received the King very well, along with the King’s soldiers, ministers and carriers. He supplied all the necessities to worship these guests, for he possessed a kāmadhenu cow that was able to supply everything. ॥ 9-15-24 ॥

जंगल में कठिन तपस्या में रत ऋषि जमदग्नि ने सैनिकों, मंत्रियों तथा पालकी वाहकों समेत राजा का अच्छी तरह स्वागत किया। उन्होंने इन अतिथियों को पूजा करने की सारी सामग्री जुटाई क्योंकि उनके पास कामधेनु गाय थी जो हर वस्तु प्रदान करने में सक्षम थी। ॥ ९-१५-२४ ॥

स वीरस्तत्र तद्दृष्ट्वा आत्मैश्वर्यातिशायनम् । तन्नाद्रियताग्निहोत्र्यां साभिलाषः स हैहयः ॥ ९-१५-२५ ॥
Kārtavīryārjuna thought that Jamadagni was more powerful and wealthy than himself because of possessing a jewel in the form of the kāmadhenu. Therefore he and his own men, the Haihayas, were not very much appreciative of Jamadagni’s reception. On the contrary, they wanted to possess that kāmadhenu, which was useful for the execution of the agnihotra sacrifice. ॥ 9-15-25 ॥

कार्तवीर्यार्जुन ने सोचा कि जमदग्नि उसकी तुलना में अधिक शक्तिशाली एवं सम्पन्न है क्योंकि उसके पास कामधेनु रूपी रत्न है अतएव उसने तथा उसके हैहयजनों ने जमदग्नि के सत्कार की अधिक प्रशंसा नहीं की। उल्टे, वे उस कामधेनु को लेना चाहते थे जो अग्निहोत्र यज्ञ के लिए लाभदायक थी। ॥ ९-१५-२५ ॥
