धर्मार्थकाम इति योऽभिहितस्त्रिवर्ग ईक्षा त्रयी नयदमौ विविधा च वार्ता । मन्ये तदेतदखिलं निगमस्य सत्यं स्वात्मार्पणं स्वसुहृदः परमस्य पुंसः ।। ७-६-२६ ।।

Religion, economic development and sense gratification — these are described in the Vedas as tri-varga, or three ways to salvation. Within these three categories are education and self-realization; ritualistic ceremonies performed according to Vedic injunction; logic; the science of law and order; and the various means of earning one’s livelihood. These are the external subject matters of study in the Vedas, and therefore I consider them material. However, I consider surrender to the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu to be transcendental. ।। 7-6-26 ।।

english translation

धर्म, अर्थ तथा काम—इन तीनों को वेदों में त्रिवर्ग अर्थात् मोक्ष के तीन साधन कहा गया है। इन तीन वर्गों के अन्तर्गत ही शिक्षा तथा आत्म-साक्षात्कार, वैदिक आदेशानुसार सम्पन्न कर्मकाण्ड, विधि तथा व्यवस्था विज्ञान एवं जीविका अर्जित करने के विविध साधन आते हैं। ये तो वेदों के अध्ययन के बाह्य विषय हैं अतएव मैं उन्हें भौतिक मानता हूँ। किन्तु मैं भगवान् विष्णु के चरणकमलों में समर्पण को दिव्य मानता हूँ। ।। ७-६-२६ ।।

ज्ञानं तदेतदमलं दुरवापमाह नारायणो नरसखः किल नारदाय । एकान्तिनां भगवतस्तदकिञ्चनानां पादारविन्दरजसाऽऽप्लुतदेहिनां स्यात् ।। ७-६-२७ ।।

sanskrit

Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the well-wisher and friend of all living entities, formerly explained this transcendental knowledge to the great saint Nārada. Such knowledge is extremely difficult to understand without the mercy of a saintly person like Nārada, but everyone who has taken shelter of Nārada’s disciplic succession can understand this confidential knowledge. ।। 7-6-27 ।।

समस्त जीवों के शुभचिन्तक एवं मित्र भगवान् नारायण ने यह दिव्य ज्ञान पहले परम सन्त नारद को दिया। ऐसा ज्ञान नारद जैसे सन्त पुरुष की कृपा के बिना समझ पाना कठिन है, किन्तु जिसने भी नारद की परम्परा की शरण ले रखी है, वह इस गुह्य ज्ञान को समझ सकता है। ।। ७-६-२७ ।।

श्रुतमेतन्मया पूर्वं ज्ञानं विज्ञानसंयुतम् । धर्मं भागवतं शुद्धं नारदाद्देवदर्शनात् ।। ७-६-२८ ।।

sanskrit

Prahlāda Mahārāja continued: I received this knowledge from the great saint Nārada Muni, who is always engaged in devotional service. This knowledge, which is called bhāgavata-dharma, is fully scientific. It is based on logic and philosophy and is free from all material contamination. ।। 7-6-28 ।।

english translation

प्रह्लाद महाराज ने आगे कहा : मैंने यह ज्ञान भक्ति में सदैव तल्लीन रहने वाले परम सन्त नारद से प्राप्त किया है। यह ज्ञान भागवत धर्म कहलाता है, जो अत्यन्त वैज्ञानिक है। यह तर्क तथा दर्शन पर आधारित है और समस्त भौतिक कल्मष से मुक्त है। ।। ७-६-२८ ।।

दैत्यपुत्रा ऊचुः प्रह्लाद त्वं वयं चापि नर्तेन्यं विद्महे गुरुम् । एताभ्यां गुरुपुत्राभ्यां बालानामपि हीश्वरौ ।। ७-६-२९ ।।

The sons of the demons replied: Dear Prahlāda, neither you nor we know any teacher or spiritual master other than Ṣaṇḍa and Amarka, the sons of Śukrācārya. After all, we are children and they our controllers. ।। 7-6-29 ।।

english translation

दैत्य पुत्रों ने उत्तर दिया: प्रह्लाद, न तुम और न ही हम शुक्राचार्य के पुत्र षण्ड तथा अमर्क के अतिरिक्त अन्य किसी अध्यापक या गुरु को जानते हैं। अन्तत: हम बच्चे हैं और वे हमारे नियंत्रक हैं। ।। ७-६-२९ ।।

बालस्यान्तःपुरस्थस्य महत्सङ्गो दुरन्वयः । छिन्धि नः संशयं सौम्य स्याच्चेद्विश्रम्भकारणम् ।। ७-६-३० ।।

For you especially, who always remain within the palace, it is very difficult to associate with a great personality. Dear friend, most gentle one, would you kindly explain how it was possible for you to hear Nārada? Kindly dispel our doubts in this regard. ।। 7-6-30 ।।

english translation

तुम जैसे सदैव महल के भीतर रहने वाले के लिए ऐसे महापुरुष की संगति कर पाना अत्यन्त कठिन है। हे परम भद्र मित्र, क्या तुम यह बतलाओगे कि तुम्हारे लिए नारद से सुन पाना कैसे सम्भव हो सका? इस सम्बन्ध में हमारी शंका को दूर करो। ।। ७-६-३० ।।
