नारद उवाच ब्रह्मचारी गुरुकुले वसन् दान्तो गुरोर्हितम् । आचरन् दासवन्नीचो गुरौ सुदृढसौहृदः ।। ७-१२-१ ।।

sanskrit

Nārada Muni said: A student should practice completely controlling his senses. He should be submissive and should have an attitude of firm friendship for the spiritual master. With a great vow, the brahmacārī should live at the gurukula, only for the benefit of the guru. ।। 7-12-1 ।।

english translation

नारद मुनि ने कहा : विद्यार्थी को चाहिए कि वह अपनी इन्द्रियों पर पूर्ण संयम रखने का अभ्यास करे। उसे विनीत होना चाहिए और गुरु के साथ दृढ़ मित्रता की प्रवृत्ति रखनी चाहिए। ब्रह्मचारी को चाहिए कि वह महान् व्रत लेकर गुरुकुल में केवल अपने गुरु के लाभ ही रहे। ।। ७-१२-१ ।।

सायं प्रातरुपासीत गुर्वग्न्यर्कसुरोत्तमान् । उभे सन्ध्ये च यतवाग्जपन् ब्रह्म समाहितः ।। ७-१२-२ ।।

sanskrit

At both junctions of day and night, namely, in the early morning and in the evening, he should be fully absorbed in thoughts of the spiritual master, fire, the sun-god and Lord Viṣṇu and by chanting the Gāyatrī mantra he should worship them. ।। 7-12-2 ।।

english translation

दिन तथा रात्रि के संधिकाल में अर्थात् प्रात:काल तथा संध्या समय उसे गुरु, अग्नि, सूर्यदेव तथा भगवान् विष्णु के विचारों में लीन रहना चाहिए और गायत्री मंत्र को जपते हुए उनकी पूजा करनी चाहिए। ।। ७-१२-२ ।।

छन्दांस्यधीयीत गुरोराहूतश्चेत्सुयन्त्रितः । उपक्रमेऽवसाने च चरणौ शिरसा नमेत् ।। ७-१२-३ ।।

sanskrit

Being called by the spiritual master, the student should study the Vedic mantras regularly. Every day, before beginning his studies and at the end of his studies, the disciple should respectfully offer obeisances unto the spiritual master. ।। 7-12-3 ।।

english translation

गुरु द्वारा बताए जाने पर विद्यार्थी को चाहिए कि वह उनसे नियमपूर्वक वैदिक मंत्रों का अध्ययन करे। शिष्य को प्रतिदिन अपना अध्ययन प्रारम्भ करने के पूर्व तथा अध्ययन के अन्त में अपने गुरु को सादर नमस्कार करना चाहिए। ।। ७-१२-३ ।।

मेखलाजिनवासांसि जटादण्डकमण्डलून् । बिभृयादुपवीतं च दर्भपाणिर्यथोदितम् ।। ७-१२-४ ।।

sanskrit

Carrying pure kuśa grass in his hand, the brahmacārī should dress regularly with a belt of straw and with deerskin garments. He should wear matted hair, carry a rod and waterpot and be decorated with a sacred thread, as recommended in the śāstras. ।। 7-12-4 ।।

english translation

अपने हाथ में शुद्ध कुश घास लिए हुए ब्रह्मचारी को मूँज की मेखला तथा मृगछाला का वस्त्र पहनना चाहिए। उसे शास्त्रोक्त विधि से जटा रखना चाहिए, दण्ड धारण करना चाहिए, कमण्डल लेना चाहिए और यज्ञोपवीत धारण करना चाहिए। ।। ७-१२-४ ।।

सायं प्रातश्चरेद्भैक्षं गुरवे तन्निवेदयेत् । भुञ्जीत यद्यनुज्ञातो नो चेदुपवसेत्क्वचित् ।। ७-१२-५ ।।

sanskrit

The brahmacārī should go out morning and evening to collect alms, and he should offer all that he collects to the spiritual master. He should eat only if ordered to take food by the spiritual master; otherwise, if the spiritual master does not give this order, he may sometimes have to fast. ।। 7-12-5 ।।

english translation

ब्रह्मचारी को सुबह-शाम भिक्षा माँगने के लिए बाहर जाना चाहिए और जो कुछ भी भिक्षा में मिले उसे लाकर गुरु को दे दे। वह तभी भोजन करे जब गुरु उसे भोजन करने का आदेश दे, अन्यथा यदि कभी गुरु आदेश न दे, तो वह कभी कभी उपवास करे। ।। ७-१२-५ ।।
