वार्ता विचित्रा शालीनयायावरशिलोञ्छनम् । विप्रवृत्तिश्चतुर्धेयं श्रेयसी चोत्तरोत्तरा ।। ७-११-१६ ।।

As an alternative, a brāhmaṇa may also take to the vaiśya’s occupational duty of agriculture, cow protection, or trade. He may depend on that which he has received without begging, he may beg in the paddy field every day, he may collect paddy left in a field by its proprietor, or he may collect food grains left here and there in the shops of grain dealers. These are four means of livelihood that may also be adopted by brāhmaṇas. Among these four, each of them in succession is better than the one preceding it. ।। 7-11-16 ।।

विकल्प के रूप में ब्राह्मण वैश्य की कृषि, गोरक्षा या व्यापार की वृत्तियाँ ग्रहण कर सकता है। जो कुछ बिना माँगे मिल जाये वह उस पर आश्रित रह सकता है, वह प्रति दिन धान के खेत में जाकर भिक्षा माँग सकता है, वह स्वामी द्वारा खेत में थोडा अन्न इकट्टा कर सकता है; या अन्न के व्यापारियों की दूकान में पिछले गिरे हुए अन्न को एकत्र कर सकता है। जीविका के ये चार साधन हैं जिन्हें ब्राह्मण भी अपना सकते हैं। इन चारों में से प्रत्येक साधन अपने पिछेले से (उत्तरोत्तर) श्रेष्ठ है। ।। ७-११-१६ ।।
