न निष्कृतैरुदितैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिस्तथा विशुद्ध्यत्यघवान् व्रतादिभिः । यथा हरेर्नामपदैरुदाहृतैस्तदुत्तमश्लोकगुणोपलम्भकम् ।। ६-२-११ ।।

By following the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies or undergoing atonement, sinful men do not become as purified as by chanting once the holy name of Lord Hari. Although ritualistic atonement may free one from sinful reactions, it does not awaken devotional service, unlike the chanting of the Lord’s names, which reminds one of the Lord’s fame, qualities, attributes, pastimes and paraphernalia. ।। 6-2-11 ।।

english translation

वैदिक कर्मकाण्डों का पालन करने अथवा प्रायश्चित्त करने से पापी लोग उस तरह से शुद्ध नहीं हो पाते जिस तरह एक बार भगवान् हरि के पवित्र नाम का कीर्तन करने से शुद्ध बनते हैं। यद्यपि आनुष्ठानिक प्रायश्चित्त मनुष्य को पापफलों से मुक्त कर सकता है, किन्तु यह भक्ति को जाग्रत नहीं करता जिस तरह परम भगवान् के नाम का कीर्तन मनुष्य को भगवान् के यश, गुण, लक्षण, लीलाओं तथा साज-सामग्री का स्मरण कराता है। ।। ६-२-११ ।।

नैकान्तिकं तद्धि कृतेऽपि निष्कृते मनः पुनर्धावति चेदसत्पथे । तत्कर्मनिर्हारमभीप्सतां हरेर्गुणानुवादः खलु सत्त्वभावनः ।। ६-२-१२ ।।

The ritualistic ceremonies of atonement recommended in the religious scriptures are insufficient to cleanse the heart absolutely because after atonement one’s mind again runs toward material activities. Consequently, for one who wants liberation from the fruitive reactions of material activities, the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, or glorification of the name, fame and pastimes of the Lord, is recommended as the most perfect process of atonement because such chanting eradicates the dirt from one’s heart completely. ।। 6-2-12 ।।

english translation

धार्मिक शास्त्रों में संस्तुत किये गये प्रायश्चित्त के कर्मकाण्ड हृदय को पूरी तरह स्वच्छ बनाने में अपर्याप्त होते हैं, क्योंकि प्रायश्चित्त के बाद मनुष्य का मन पुन: भौतिक कर्मों की ओर दौड़ता है। फलस्वरूप, जो व्यक्ति भौतिक कार्यों के सकाम फलों से मुक्ति चाहता है, उसके लिए हरे कृष्ण मंत्र का कीर्तन या भगवान् के नाम, यश तथा लीलाओं की महिमा का गायन प्रायश्चित्त की सबसे पूर्ण विधि के रूप में संस्तुत किया जाता है, क्योंकि ऐसे कीर्तन से मनुष्य के हृदय में संचित धूल स्वच्छ हो जाती है। ।। ६-२-१२ ।।

अथैनं मापनयत कृताशेषाघनिष्कृतम् । यदसौ भगवन्नाम म्रियमाणः समग्रहीत् ।। ६-२-१३ ।।

At the time of death, this Ajāmila helplessly and very loudly chanted the holy name of the Lord, Nārāyaṇa. That chanting alone has already freed him from the reactions of all sinful life. Therefore, O servants of Yamarāja, do not try to take him to your master for punishment in hellish conditions. ।। 6-2-13 ।।

english translation

इस अजामिल ने मृत्यु के समय असहाय होकर तथा अत्यन्त जोर-जोर से भगवान् नारायण के पवित्र नाम का उच्चारण किया है। एकमात्र उसी उच्चारण ने पूरे पापमय जीवन के फलों से उसे पहले ही मुक्त कर दिया है। इसलिए हे यमराज के सेवको! तुम उसे नारकीय दशाओं में दण्ड देने के लिए अपने स्वामी के पास ले जाने का प्रयास मत करो। । ६-२-१३ ।।

साङ्केत्यं पारिहास्यं वा स्तोभं हेलनमेव वा । वैकुण्ठनामग्रहणमशेषाघहरं विदुः ।। ६-२-१४ ।।

One who chants the holy name of the Lord is immediately freed from the reactions of unlimited sins, even if he chants indirectly [to indicate something else], jokingly, for musical entertainment, or even neglectfully. This is accepted by all the learned scholars of the scriptures. ।। 6-2-14 ।।

english translation

जो व्यक्ति भगवन्नाम का कीर्तन करता है उसे तुरन्त अनगिनत पापों के फलों से मुक्त कर दिया जाता है। भले ही उसने यह कीर्तन अप्रत्यक्ष रूप में (कुछ अन्य संकेत करने के लिए), परिहास में, संगीतमय मनोरंजन के लिए अथवा उपेक्षा भाव से क्यों न किया हो। इसे शास्त्रों में पारंगत सभी विद्वान पंडित स्वीकार करते हैं। ।। ६-२-१४ ।।

पतितः स्खलितो भग्नः सन्दष्टस्तप्त आहतः । हरिरित्यवशेनाह पुमान् नार्हति यातनाम् ।। ६-२-१५ ।।

If one chants the holy name of Hari and then dies because of an accidental misfortune, such as falling from the top of a house, slipping and suffering broken bones while traveling on the road, being bitten by a serpent, being afflicted with pain and high fever, or being injured by a weapon, one is immediately absolved from having to enter hellish life, even though he is sinful. ।। 6-2-15 ।।

english translation

यदि कोई हरिनाम का उचार करता है और तभी किसी आकस्मिक दुर्भाग्य से यथा छत से गिरने, फिसलने या सडक़ पर यात्रा करते समय हड्डी टूट जाने, सर्प द्वारा काटे जाने, पीड़ा तथा तेज ज्वर से आक्रान्त होने या हथियार से घायल होने से, मर जाता है, तो वह कितना ही पापी क्यों न हो नारकीय जीवन में प्रवेश करने से वह तुरन्त मुक्त कर दिया जाता है। ।। ६-२-१५ ।।
