मातृष्वसुरभिप्रायमिन्द्र आज्ञाय मानद । शुश्रूषणेनाश्रमस्थां दितिं पर्यचरत्कविः ।। ६-१८-५६ ।।

sanskrit

O King, who are respectful to everyone, Indra understood Diti’s purpose, and thus he contrived to fulfill his own interests. Following the logic that self-preservation is the first law of nature, he wanted to break Diti’s promise. Thus he engaged himself in the service of Diti, his aunt, who was residing in an āśrama. ।। 6-18-56 ।।

english translation

सबों का सम्मान करने वाले हे राजा! इन्द्र ने दिति का मन्तव्य जान लिया, अत: वह अपना स्वार्थ साधने की युक्ति सोचने लगा। इस तर्क का अनुसरण करते हुए कि आत्म-रक्षा प्रकृति का प्रथम नियम है, उसने दिति की प्रतिज्ञा को भंग करना चाहा। अत: वह आश्रमवासिनी अपनी मौसी दिति की सेवा करने लगा। ।। ६-१८-५६ ।।

Indra served his aunt daily by bringing flowers, fruits, roots and wood for yajñas from the forest. He also brought kuśa grass, leaves, sprouts, earth and water exactly at the proper time. ।। 6-18-57 ।।

english translation

इन्द्र प्रतिदिन जंगल से फूल, फल, कंद तथा यज्ञ के लिए समिधा लाकर अपनी मौसी की सेवा करने लगा। वह उचित समय पर कुश, पत्तियाँ, कलियाँ, मिट्टी तथा जल भी ले आता था। ।। ६-१८-५७ ।।

एवं तस्या व्रतस्थाया व्रतच्छिद्रं हरिर्नृप । प्रेप्सुः पर्यचरज्जिह्मो मृगहेव मृगाकृतिः ।। ६-१८-५८ ।।

O King Parīkṣit, as the hunter of a deer becomes like a deer by covering his body with deerskin and serving the deer, so Indra, although at heart the enemy of the sons of Diti, became outwardly friendly and served Diti in a faithful way. Indra’s purpose was to cheat Diti as soon as he could find some fault in the way she discharged the vows of the ritualistic ceremony. However, he wanted to be undetected, and therefore he served her very carefully. ।। 6-18-58 ।।

english translation

हे राजा परीक्षित! जिस प्रकार बहेलिया हिरन को मारने के लिए हिरन की खाल पहन कर छद्मवेष धारण करता है उसी प्रकार से इन्द्र, हृदय से दिति पुत्रों का शत्रु किन्तु बाहर से मित्र बनकर अत्यन्त श्रद्धापूर्वक दिति की सेवा करने लगा। इन्द्र का मन्तव्य दिति के व्रत के अनुष्ठान में त्रुटि निकालकर उसे धोखा देना था, किन्तु साथ ही वह नहीं चाहता था कि कोई उसे पहचान सके इसलिए वह अत्यन्त सतर्कता के साथ उसकी सेवा करने लगा। ।। ६-१८-५८ ।।

O master of the entire world, when Indra could find no faults, he thought, “How will there be good fortune for me?” Thus he was full of deep anxiety. ।। 6-18-59 ।।

हे विश्वेश्वर! जब इन्द्र को कोई त्रुटि न मिली तो उसने सोचा, अब मेरा कल्याण कैसे हो? इस प्रकार वह गहरी चिन्ता में डूब गया। ।। ६-१८-५९ ।।

Having grown weak and thin because of strictly following the principles of the vow, Diti once unfortunately neglected to wash her mouth, hands and feet after eating and went to sleep during the evening twilight. ।‌। 6-18-60 ।।

english translation

कठोरता से व्रत का पालन करते रहने से अत्यन्त क्षीण एवं अशक्त हो जाने से दुर्भाग्यवश दिति ने भोजन के पश्चात् मुँह, हाथ तथा पाँव धोने में लापरवाही बरती और सन्ध्या में ही सो गई। ।। ६-१८-६० ।।
