अयं हि श्रुतसम्पन्नः शीलवृत्तगुणालयः । धृतव्रतो मृदुर्दान्तः सत्यवान्मन्त्रविच्छुचिः ॥ ६-१-५६ ॥
In the beginning this brāhmaṇa named Ajāmila studied all the Vedic literatures. He was a reservoir of good character, good conduct and good qualities. Firmly established in executing all the Vedic injunctions, he was very mild and gentle, and he kept his mind and senses under control. Furthermore, he was always truthful, he knew how to chant the Vedic mantras, and he was also very pure. ॥ 6-1-56 ॥

प्रारम्भ में अजामिल नामक उस ब्राह्मण ने सारे वैदिक ग्रन्थों का अध्ययन किया था। वह अच्छे चरित्र, अच्छे चाल-चलन तथा अच्छे गुणों का आगार था। वह सारे वैदिक आदेशों को सम्पन्न करने में दृढ़ था, वह अत्यन्त मृदु तथा सुशील था और अपने मन तथा इन्द्रियों को वश में रखता था। यही नहीं, वह सदा सच बोलता था, वह जानता था कि वैदिक मंत्रों का उच्चारण करना होता है तथा वह अत्यन्त शुद्ध भी था। ॥ ६-१-५६ ॥

गुर्वग्न्यतिथिवृद्धानां शुश्रूषुरनहङ्कृतः । सर्वभूतसुहृत्साधुर्मितवागनसूयकः ॥ ६-१-५७ ॥
Ajāmila was very respectful to his spiritual master, the fire-god, guests, and the elderly members of his household. Indeed, he was free from false prestige. He was upright, benevolent to all living entities, and well-behaved. He would never speak nonsense or envy anyone. ॥ 6-1-57 ॥

अजामिल अपने गुरु, अग्निदेव, अतिथियों तथा घर के वृद्धजनों का अतीव आदर करता था। निस्सन्देह वह झूठी प्रतिष्ठा से मुक्त था। वह सरल, सभी जीवों के प्रति उपकार करने वाला तथा शिष्ट था। वह न तो व्यर्थ की बातें करता था, न किसी से ईर्ष्या करता था। ॥ ६-१-५७ ॥

एकदासौ वनं यातः पितृसन्देशकृद्द्विजः । आदाय तत आवृत्तः फलपुष्पसमित्कुशान् ॥ ६-१-५८ ॥
Once this brāhmaṇa Ajāmila, following the order of his father, went to the forest to collect fruit, flowers and two kinds of grass, called samit and kuśa. ॥ 6-1-58 ॥
english translation
एक बार यह ब्राह्मण अजामिल अपने पिता का आदेश पालन करते हुए जंगल से फल, फूल तथा समित् और कुश नामक दो प्रकार की घासें लाने जंगल गया। ॥ ६-१-५८ ॥

ददर्श कामिनं कञ्चिच्छूद्रं सह भुजिष्यया । पीत्वा च मधु मैरेयं मदाघूर्णितनेत्रया ॥ ६-१-५९ ॥
On the way home, he came upon a śūdra, a very lusty, fourth-class man, who was shamelessly embracing and kissing a prostitute. Both the śūdra and the prostitute were drunk. The prostitute’s eyes were rolling in intoxication, ॥ 6-1-59 ॥

घर वापस आते समय उसे एक अत्यन्त कामुक, चतुर्थ वर्ण का व्यक्ति शूद्र मिला जो निर्लज्ज होकर एक वेश्या का आलिगंन तथा चुम्बन कर रहा था। यह शूद्र तथा वेश्या दोनों ही सुरापान किये हुए थे। वेश्या की आँखें नशे से घूम रही थीं ॥ ६-१-५९ ॥

मत्तया विश्लथन्नीव्या व्यपेतं निरपत्रपम् । क्रीडन्तमनुगायन्तं हसन्तमनयान्तिके ॥ ६-१-६० ॥
The śūdra was smiling, singing and enjoying as if this were proper behavior. The prostitute’s dress had become loose. Such was the condition in which Ajāmila saw them. ॥ 6-1-60 ॥

यह शूद्र इस तरह हँसते, गाते हुए आनन्द ले रहा था मानो यही उचित आचरण हो। वेश्या के वस्त्र शिथिल पड़ गये थे। अजामिल ने उन्हें ऐसी दशा में देखा। ॥ ६-१-६० ॥
