मैत्रेय उवाच न वै मुकुन्दस्य पदारविन्दयोः रजोजुषस्तात भवादृशा जनाः । वाञ्छन्ति तद्दास्यमृतेऽर्थमात्मनो यदृच्छया लब्धमनः समृद्धयः ।। ४-९-३६ ।।

sanskrit

The great sage Maitreya continued: My dear Vidura, persons like you, who are pure devotees of the lotus feet of Mukunda [the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who can offer liberation] and who are always attached to the honey of His lotus feet, are always satisfied in serving at the lotus feet of the Lord. In any condition of life, such persons remain satisfied, and thus they never ask the Lord for material prosperity. ।। 4-9-36 ।।

english translation

महर्षि मैत्रेय ने आगे कहा : हे विदुर, आप जैसे व्यक्ति, जो मुकुन्द (मुक्तिप्रदाता भगवान्) के चरणकमलों के विशुद्ध भक्त हैं और उनके चरणकमलों में भौंरों के सदृश्य आसक्त रहते हैं, सदैव भगवान् के चरणकमलों की सेवा करने में ही प्रसन्न रहते हैं। ऐसे पुरुष, जीवन की किसी भी परिस्थिति में संतुष्ट रहते हैं और भगवान् से कभी भी किसी भौतिक सम्पन्नता की याचना नहीं करते। ।। ४-९-३६ ।।

आकर्ण्यात्मजमायान्तं सम्परेत्य यथागतम् । राजा न श्रद्दधे भद्रमभद्रस्य कुतो मम ।। ४-९-३७ ।।

sanskrit

When King Uttānapāda heard that his son Dhruva was coming back home, as if coming back to life after death, he could not put his faith in this message, for he was doubtful of how it could happen. He considered himself the most wretched, and therefore he thought that it was not possible for him to attain such good fortune. ।। 4-9-37 ।।

english translation

जब राजा उत्तानपाद ने सुना कि उसका पुत्र ध्रुव घर वापस आ रहा है, मानो मृत्यु के पश्चात् पुनर्जीवित हो रहा हो, तो उसे इस समाचार पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ क्योंकि उसे सन्देह था कि यह हो कैसे सकता है। उसने अपने को अत्यन्त अभागा समझ लिया था, अत: उसने सोचा कि ऐसा सौभाग्य उसे कहाँ नसीब हो सकता है? ।। ४-९-३७ ।।

श्रद्धाय वाक्यं देवर्षेर्हर्षवेगेन धर्षितः । वार्ताहर्तुरतिप्रीतो हारं प्रादान्महाधनम् ।। ४-९-३८ ।।

sanskrit

Although he could not believe the words of the messenger, he had full faith in the word of the great sage Nārada. Thus he was greatly overwhelmed by the news, and he immediately offered the messenger a highly valuable necklace in great satisfaction. ।। 4-9-38 ।।

english translation

यद्यपि उसे सन्देशवाहक की बातों पर विश्वास नहीं हुआ, किन्तु महर्षि नारद के वचन पर उसकी सम्पूर्ण श्रद्धा थी। अत: वह इस समाचार से अत्यन्त भावविह्वल हो उठा और हर्षातिरेक में झट उसने संदेशवाहक को एक बहुमूल्य हार भेंट कर दिया। ।। ४-९-३८ ।।

Then King Uttānapāda, being very eager to see the face of his lost son, mounted a chariot drawn by excellent horses and bedecked with golden filigree. Taking with him many learned brāhmaṇas, all the elderly personalities of his family, his officers, his ministers and his immediate friends, . ।। 4-9-39 ।।

english translation

अपने खोये हुए पुत्र के मुख को देखने के लिए अत्यन्त उत्सुक राजा उत्तानपाद उत्तम घोड़ों से खींचे जानेवाले तथा स्वर्णजटित रथ पर आरूढ़ हुआ। वह अपने साथ अनेक विद्वान् ब्राह्मण, परिवार के गुरुजन, अपने अधिकारी तथा मंत्री और अपने सगे मित्रों को लेकर ।। ४-९-३९ ।।

He immediately left the city. As he proceeded in this parade, there were auspicious sounds of conchshells, kettledrums, flutes, and the chanting of Vedic mantras to indicate all good fortune ।। 4-9-40 ।।

english translation

तुरन्त नगर से बाहर चला गया। जब वह इस दल के साथ आगे बढ़ रहा था, तो शंख, दुन्दुभी, वंशी तथा वेद- मंत्रों के उच्चारण की मंगलसूचक ध्वनि हो रही थी। ।। ४-९-४० ।।
