सोऽयं दीपोऽर्चिषां यद्वत्स्रोतसां तदिदं जलम् । सोऽयं पुमानिति नृणां मृषा गीर्धीर्मृषायुषाम् ।। ११-२२-४४ ।।

sanskrit

Although the illumination of a lamp consists of innumerable rays of light undergoing constant creation, transformation and destruction, a person with illusory intelligence who sees the light for a moment will speak falsely, saying, “This is the light of the lamp.” As one observes a flowing river, ever-new water passes by and goes far away, yet a foolish person, observing one point in the river, falsely states, “This is the water of the river.” Similarly, although the material body of a human being is constantly undergoing transformation, those who are simply wasting their lives falsely think and say that each particular stage of the body is the person’s real identity. ।। 11-22-44 ।।

english translation

यद्यपि दीपक की रोशनी में निरंतर सृजन, परिवर्तन और विनाश से गुजरने वाली प्रकाश की असंख्य किरणें शामिल होती हैं, भ्रामक बुद्धि वाला व्यक्ति जो एक पल के लिए भी प्रकाश को देखता है, वह झूठ बोलकर कहेगा, "यह दीपक की रोशनी है।" जैसे कोई बहती हुई नदी को देखता है, नया पानी पास से गुजरता है और दूर तक चला जाता है, फिर भी एक मूर्ख व्यक्ति नदी में एक बिंदु को देखकर झूठ बोलता है, "यह नदी का पानी है।" इसी प्रकार, यद्यपि मनुष्य का भौतिक शरीर निरंतर परिवर्तन के दौर से गुजर रहा है, जो लोग केवल अपना जीवन बर्बाद कर रहे हैं वे गलत सोचते हैं और कहते हैं कि शरीर का प्रत्येक विशेष चरण ही व्यक्ति की वास्तविक पहचान है। ।। ११-२२-४४ ।।
