सीदन् विप्रो वणिग्वृत्त्या पण्यैरेवापदं तरेत् । खड्गेन वाऽऽपदाक्रान्तो न श्ववृत्त्या कथञ्चन ।। ११-१७-४७ ।।

sanskrit

If a brāhmaṇa cannot support himself through his regular duties and is thus suffering, he may adopt the occupation of a merchant and overcome his destitute condition by buying and selling material things. If he continues to suffer extreme poverty even as a merchant, then he may adopt the occupation of a kṣatriya, taking sword in hand. But he cannot in any circumstances become like a dog, accepting an ordinary master. ।। 11-17-47 ।।

english translation

यदि कोई ब्राह्मण अपने नियमित कर्तव्यों के माध्यम से अपना भरण-पोषण नहीं कर सकता है और इस प्रकार पीड़ित है, तो वह एक व्यापारी का व्यवसाय अपना सकता है और भौतिक चीजें खरीदकर और बेचकर अपनी दयनीय स्थिति को दूर कर सकता है। यदि व्यापारी के रूप में भी उसे अत्यधिक दरिद्रता का सामना करना पड़े तो वह हाथ में तलवार लेकर क्षत्रिय का व्यवसाय अपना सकता है। लेकिन वह किसी भी परिस्थिति में एक साधारण मालिक को स्वीकार करके कुत्ते की तरह नहीं बन सकता। ।। ११-१७-४७ ।।
