प्रतिग्रहं मन्यमानस्तपस्तेजोयशोनुदम् । अन्याभ्यामेव जीवेत शिलैर्वा दोषदृक् तयोः ।। ११-१७-४१ ।।

sanskrit

A brāhmaṇa who considers that accepting charity from others will destroy his austerity, spiritual influence and fame should maintain himself by the other two brahminical occupations, namely teaching Vedic knowledge and performing sacrifice. If the brāhmaṇa considers that those two occupations also compromise his spiritual position, then he should collect rejected grains in agricultural fields and live without any dependence on others. ।। 11-17-41 ।।

english translation

एक ब्राह्मण जो मानता है कि दूसरों से दान स्वीकार करने से उसकी तपस्या, आध्यात्मिक प्रभाव और प्रसिद्धि नष्ट हो जाएगी, उसे अन्य दो ब्राह्मणवादी व्यवसायों, अर्थात् वैदिक ज्ञान पढ़ाना और यज्ञ करना, द्वारा खुद को बनाए रखना चाहिए। यदि ब्राह्मण मानता है कि ये दो व्यवसाय भी उसकी आध्यात्मिक स्थिति से समझौता करते हैं, तो उसे कृषि क्षेत्रों में अस्वीकृत अनाज इकट्ठा करना चाहिए और दूसरों पर निर्भरता के बिना रहना चाहिए। ।। ११-१७-४१ ।।
