पाण्डुपुत्रानुपासीनान् प्रश्रयप्रेमसङ्गतान् । अभ्याचष्टानुरागास्रैरन्धीभूतेन चक्षुषा ।। १-९-११ ।।

sanskrit

The sons of Mahārāja Pāṇḍu were sitting silently nearby, overtaken with affection for their dying grandfather. Seeing this, Bhīṣmadeva congratulated them with feeling. There were tears of ecstasy in his eyes, for he was overwhelmed by love and affection. ।। 1-9-11 ।।

english translation

पास ही महाराज पाण्डु के सारे पुत्र शान्त बैठे थे और अपने मरणासन्न पितामह के प्रेम से अभिभूत थे। यह देखकर भीष्मदेव ने उन्हें भावपूर्ण बधाई दी। उनके नेत्रों में आनन्दाश्रु थे, क्योंकि वे प्रेम तथा स्नेह से आप्लावित हो गये थे। ।। १-९-११ ।।

अहो कष्टमहोऽन्याय्यं यद्यूयं धर्मनन्दनाः । जीवितुं नार्हथ क्लिष्टं विप्रधर्माच्युताश्रयाः ।। १-९-१२ ।।

sanskrit

Bhīṣmadeva said: Oh, what terrible sufferings and what terrible injustices you good souls suffer for being the sons of religion personified. You did not deserve to remain alive under those tribulations, yet you were protected by the brāhmaṇas, God and religion. ।। 1-9-12 ।।

english translation

भीष्मदेव ने कहा : ओह, तुम लोगों ने, साक्षात् धर्म के पुत्र होते हुए भी, कितनी यातनाएँ तथा कितना अन्याय सहा है। उन कष्टों के अन्तर्गत तुम सबको जीवित रहने की आशा न थी, फिर भी ब्राह्मणों, ईश्वर तथा धर्म ने तुम्हारी रक्षा की है। ।। १-९-१२ ।।

संस्थितेऽतिरथे पाण्डौ पृथा बालप्रजा वधूः । युष्मत्कृते बहून् क्लेशान् प्राप्ता तोकवती मुहुः ।। १-९-१३ ।।

sanskrit

As far as my daughter-in-law Kuntī is concerned, upon the great General Pāṇḍu’s death, she became a widow with many children, and therefore she suffered greatly. And when you were grown up she suffered a great deal also because of your actions. ।। 1-9-13 ।।

english translation

जहाँ तक मेरी पुत्रवधू कुन्ती का सम्बन्ध है, वह महान् सेनापति पाण्डु की मृत्यु होने पर अनेक सारे बच्चों के साथ विधवा हो गई और इस के कारण उसने घोर कष्ट सहे। और अब जब तुम लोग बड़े हो गये हो, तो भी वह तुम्हारे कर्मों के कारण काफी कष्ट उठा रही है। ।। १-९-१३ ।।

सर्वं कालकृतं मन्ये भवतां च यदप्रियम् । सपालो यद्वशे लोको वायोरिव घनावलिः ।। १-९-१४ ।।

sanskrit

In my opinion, this is all due to inevitable time, under whose control everyone in every planet is carried, just as the clouds are carried by the wind. ।। 1-9-14 ।।

english translation

मेरे विचार से यह सब प्रबल काल के कारण हुआ है, जिसके वशीभूत होकर हर कोई व्यक्ति प्रत्येक लोक में मारा मारा फिरता है, जिस प्रकार वायु द्वारा बादल इधर से उधर ले जाये जाते हैं। ।। १-९-१४ ।।

यत्र धर्मसुतो राजा गदापाणिर्वृकोदरः । कृष्णोऽस्त्री गाण्डिवं चापं सुहृत्कृष्णस्ततो विपत् ।। १-९-१५ ।।

Oh, how wonderful is the influence of inevitable time! It is irreversible — otherwise, how can there be reverses in the presence of King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of the demigod controlling religion; Bhīma, the great fighter with a club; the great bowman Arjuna with his mighty weapon Gāṇḍīva; and above all, the Lord, the direct well-wisher of the Pāṇḍavas? ।। 1-9-15 ।।

english translation

ओह, अपरिहार्य काल का प्रभाव कितना आश्चर्यजनक होता है, यह अपरिवर्तनीय है अन्यथा धर्मराज के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर, गदाधारी भीम तथा गाण्डीव अस्त्र धारण करनेवाले बलशाली महान् धनुर्धर अर्जुन एवं सबके ऊपर पाण्डवों के प्रत्यक्ष हितैषी कृष्ण के होते हुए यह विपत्ति क्यों आती? ।। १-९-१५ ।।
