सूत उवाच अथते सम्परेतानां स्वानामुदकमिच्छताम् । दातुं सकृष्णा गङ्गायां पुरस्कृत्य ययुः स्त्रियः ।। १-८-१ ।।

sanskrit

Sūta Gosvāmī said: Thereafter the Pāṇḍavas, desiring to deliver water to the dead relatives who had desired it, went to the Ganges with Draupadī. The ladies walked in front. ।। 1-8-1 ।।

english translation

सूत गोस्वामी ने कहा : तत्पश्चात्, पाण्डवगण अपने मृत परिजनों की इच्छानुसार उन्हें जल-दान देने हेतु द्रौपदी सहित गंगा के तट पर गये। स्त्रियाँ आगे-आगे चल रही थीं। ।। १-८-१ ।।

तेनिनीयोदकं सर्वे विलप्य चभृशं पुनः । आप्लुता हरिपादाब्जरजःपूतसरिज्जले ।। १-८-२ ।।

sanskrit

Having lamented over them and sufficiently offered Ganges water, they bathed in the Ganges, whose water is sanctified due to being mixed with the dust of the lotus feet of the Lord. ।। 1-8-2 ।।

english translation

उनके लिए शोक कर चुकने तथा पर्याप्त गंगाजल अर्पित कर चुकने के बाद उन सबों ने गंगा में स्नान किया, जिसका जल भगवान् के चरणकमलों की धूलि मिल जाने के कारण पवित्र हो गया है। ।। १-८-२ ।।

तत्रासीनं कुरुपतिं धृतराष्ट्रं सहानुजम् । गान्धारीं पुत्रशोकार्तां पृथां कृष्णां च माधवः ।। १-८-३ ।।

sanskrit

There sat the King of the Kurus, Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira, along with his younger brothers and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Gāndhārī, Kuntī and Draupadī, all overwhelmed with grief. Lord Kṛṣṇa was also there. ।। 1-8-3 ।।

english translation

वहीं कुरुवंशियों के राजा महाराज युधिष्ठिर अपने छोटे भाइयों, धृतराष्ट्र, गांधारी, कुन्ती तथा द्रौपदी सहित बैठ गये। वे सभी शोक से अत्यधिक पीडि़त थे। भगवान् कृष्ण भी वहाँ थे। ।। १-८-३ ।।

सान्त्वयामास मुनिभिर्हतबन्धूञ्शुचार्पितान् । भूतेषु कालस्य गतिं दर्शयन्नप्रतिक्रियाम् ।। १-८-४ ।।

sanskrit

Citing the stringent laws of the Almighty and their reactions upon living beings, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa and the munis began to pacify those who were shocked and affected. ।। 1-8-4 ।।

english translation

सर्वशक्तिमान के कठोर नियमों तथा जीवों पर उनकी प्रतिक्रियाओं का दृष्टान्त देते हुए, भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण तथा सारे मुनियों ने समस्त स्तब्ध एवं शोकार्त-जनों को ढाढ़स बँधाया। ।। १-८-४ ।।

साधयित्वाजातशत्रोः स्वं राज्यं कितवैर्हृतम् । घातयित्वासतो राज्ञः कचस्पर्शक्षतायुषः ।। १-८-५ ।।

sanskrit

The clever Duryodhana and his party cunningly usurped the kingdom of Yudhiṣṭhira, who had no enemy. By the grace of the Lord, the recovery was executed, and the unscrupulous kings who joined with Duryodhana were killed by Him. Others also died, their duration of life having decreased for their rough handling of the hair of Queen Draupadī. ।। 1-8-5 ।।

english translation

धूर्त दुर्योधन तथा उसके दल ने छल करके अजातशत्रु युधिष्ठिर का राज्य छीन लिया था। भगवत्कृपा से वह फिर प्राप्त हो गया और जिन दुष्ट राजाओं ने दुर्योधन का साथ दिया था, वे सब भगवान् के द्वारा मार डाले गये। अन्य लोग भी मारे गये, क्योंकि महारानी द्रौपदी के केशों को पकडक़र खींचने से उनकी आयु क्षीण हो चुकी थी। ।। १-८-५ ।।
