तदा शुचस्ते प्रमृजामि भद्रेयद्ब्रह्मबन्धोः शिर आततायिनः । गाण्डीवमुक्तैर्विशिखैरुपाहरेत्वाऽऽक्रम्य यत्स्नास्यसि दग्धपुत्रा ॥ १-७-१६ ॥
O gentle lady, when I present you with the head of that brāhmaṇa, after beheading him with arrows from my Gāṇḍīva bow, I shall then wipe the tears from your eyes and pacify you. Then, after burning your sons’ bodies, you can take your bath standing on his head. ॥ 1-7-16 ॥

हे देवी, जब मैं अपने गाण्डीव धनुष से छोड़े गये तीरों से उस ब्राह्मण का सिर काट के तुम्हें भेंट करूँगा, तभी मैं तुम्हारी आँखों से आँसू पोछूँगा और तुम्हें सान्त्वना प्रदान करूँगा। तब तुम अपने पुत्रों के शरीरों का दाह करने के बाद उसके सिर पर खड़ी होकर स्नान करना। ॥ १-७-१६ ॥

इति प्रियां वल्गुविचित्रजल्पैः स सान्त्वयित्वाच्युतमित्रसूतः । अन्वाद्रवद्दंशित उग्रधन्वाकपिध्वजो गुरुपुत्रं रथेन ॥ १-७-१७ ॥
Arjuna, who is guided by the infallible Lord as friend and driver, thus satisfied the dear lady by such statements. Then he dressed in armor and armed himself with furious weapons, and getting into his chariot, he set out to follow Aśvatthāmā, the son of his martial teacher. ॥ 1-7-17 ॥

इस प्रकार, मित्र तथा सारथी के रूप में अच्युत भगवान् द्वारा मार्गदर्शित किए जाने वाले अर्जुन ने अपनी प्रियतमा को ऐसे कथनों से तुष्ट किया। तब उसने अपना कवच धारण किया और भयानक अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से लैस होकर, वह अपने रथ पर चढ़ कर अपने गुरुपुत्र अश्वत्थामा का पीछा करने के लिए निकल पड़ा। ॥ १-७-१७ ॥

तमापतन्तं स विलक्ष्य दूरात्कुमारहोद्विग्नमना रथेन । पराद्रवत्प्राणपरीप्सुरुर्व्यांयावद्गमं रुद्रभयाद्यथार्कः ॥ १-७-१८ ॥
Aśvatthāmā, the murderer of the princes, seeing from a great distance Arjuna coming at him with great speed, fled in his chariot, panic stricken, just to save his life, as Brahmā fled in fear from Śiva. ॥ 1-7-18 ॥

राजकुमारों का हत्यारा, अश्वत्थामा, अर्जुन को दूर से ही अपनी ओर तेजी से आते हुए देखकर अपने रथ पर सवार होकर डर के मारे अपनी जान बचाने के लिए उसी तरह भाग निकला, जिस प्रकार शिवजी के भय से ब्रह्माजी भागे थे। ॥ १-७-१८ ॥

यदाशरणमात्मानमैक्षत श्रान्तवाजिनम् । अस्त्रं ब्रह्मशिरो मेने आत्मत्राणं द्विजात्मजः ॥ १-७-१९ ॥
When the son of the brāhmaṇa [Aśvatthāmā] saw that his horses were tired, he considered that there was no alternative for protection outside of his using the ultimate weapon, the brahmāstra [nuclear weapon]. ॥ 1-7-19 ॥

जब ब्राह्मण के पुत्र (अश्वत्थामा) ने देखा कि उसके घोड़े थक गये हैं तो उसने सोचा कि अब उसके पास अनन्तिम अस्त्र ब्रह्मास्त्र (आणविक हथियार) का प्रयोग करने के अतिरिक्त अन्य कोई विकल्प नहीं रह गया। ॥ १-७-१९ ॥

अथोपस्पृश्य सलिलं सन्दधे तत्समाहितः । अजानन्नुपसंहारं प्राणकृच्छ्र उपस्थिते ॥ १-७-२० ॥
Since his life was in danger, he touched water in sanctity and concentrated upon the chanting of the hymns for throwing nuclear weapons, although he did not know how to withdraw such weapons. ॥ 1-7-20 ॥

चूँकि उसके प्राण संकट में थे, अतएव उसने अपने को पवित्र करने के लिए जल का स्पर्श किया और ब्रह्मास्त्र चलाने के लिए मन्त्रोच्चार में अपना ध्यान एकाग्र किया, यद्यपि उसे इस अस्त्र को वापस लाने की विधि ज्ञात न थी। ॥ १-७-२० ॥
