कथमालक्षितः पौरैः सम्प्राप्तः कुरुजाङ्गलान् । उन्मत्तमूकजडवद्विचरन् गजसाह्वये ॥ १-४-६ ॥
How was he [Śrīla Śukadeva, the son of Vyāsa] recognized by the citizens when he entered the city of Hastināpura [now Delhi], after wandering in the provinces of Kuru and Jāṅgala, appearing like a madman, dumb and retarded? ॥ 1-4-6 ॥

कुरु तथा जांगल प्रदेशों में पागल, गूँगे तथा मूढ़ की भाँति घूमने के बाद, जब वे (व्यासपुत्र श्रील शुकदेव) हस्तिनापुर (अब दिल्ली) नगर में प्रविष्ट हुए, तो वहाँ के नागरिकों ने उन्हें कैसे पहचाना? ॥ १-४-६ ॥

कथं वा पाण्डवेयस्य राजर्षेर्मुनिना सह । संवादः समभूत्तात यत्रैषा सात्वती श्रुतिः ॥ १-४-७ ॥
How did it so happen that King Parīkṣit met this great sage, making it possible for this great transcendental essence of the Vedas [Bhāgavatam] to be sung to him? ॥ 1-4-7 ॥

राजा परीक्षित की इस महामुनि से कैसे भेंट हुई जिसके फलस्वरूप वेदों के इस महान् दिव्य सार (भागवत) का वाचन सम्भव हो सका? ॥ १-४-७ ॥

स गोदोहनमात्रं हि गृहेषु गृहमेधिनाम् । अवेक्षते महाभागस्तीर्थीकुर्वंस्तदाश्रमम् ॥ १-४-८ ॥
He [Śukadeva Gosvāmī] was accustomed to stay at the door of a householder only long enough for a cow to be milked. And he did this just to sanctify the residence. ॥ 1-4-8 ॥

वे (शुकदेव गोस्वामी) किसी गृहस्थ के द्वार पर उतनी ही देर रुकते, जितने समय में गाय दुही जा सकती है। वे उस घर को पवित्र करने के लिए ही ऐसा करते थे। ॥ १-४-८ ॥

अभिमन्युसुतं सूत प्राहुर्भागवतोत्तमम् । तस्य जन्म महाश्चर्यं कर्माणि च गृणीहि नः ॥ १-४-९ ॥
It is said that Mahārāja Parīkṣit is a great first-class devotee of the Lord and that his birth and activities are all wonderful. Please tell us about him. ॥ 1-4-9 ॥

कहा जाता है कि महाराज परीक्षित उच्च कोटि के भगवद्भक्त थे और उनके जन्म तथा कर्म अत्यन्त आश्चर्यजनक थे। कृपया उनके विषय में हमें बताएँ। ॥ १-४-९ ॥

स सम्राट् कस्य वा हेतोः पाण्डूनां मानवर्धनः । प्रायोपविष्टो गङ्गायामनादृत्याधिराट् श्रियम् ॥ १-४-१० ॥
He was a great emperor and possessed all the opulences of his acquired kingdom. He was so exalted that he was increasing the prestige of the Pāṇḍu dynasty. Why did he give up everything to sit down on the bank of the Ganges and fast until death? ॥ 1-4-10 ॥

वे एक महान् सम्राट थे और उनके पास उपार्जित राज्य के सारे ऐश्वर्य थे। वे इतने वरेण्य थे कि उनसे पाण्डु वंश की प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ रही थी। तो फिर वे सब कुछ त्याग कर गंगा नदी के तट पर बैठकर क्यों आमरण उपवास करने लगे? ॥ १-४-१० ॥
