स सम्राट् कस्य वा हेतोः पाण्डूनां मानवर्धनः । प्रायोपविष्टो गङ्गायामनादृत्याधिराट् श्रियम् ।। १-४-१० ।।

He was a great emperor and possessed all the opulences of his acquired kingdom. He was so exalted that he was increasing the prestige of the Pāṇḍu dynasty. Why did he give up everything to sit down on the bank of the Ganges and fast until death? ।। 1-4-10 ।।

english translation

वे एक महान् सम्राट थे और उनके पास उपार्जित राज्य के सारे ऐश्वर्य थे। वे इतने वरेण्य थे कि उनसे पाण्डु वंश की प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ रही थी। तो फिर वे सब कुछ त्याग कर गंगा नदी के तट पर बैठकर क्यों आमरण उपवास करने लगे? ।। १-४-१० ।।
