सूत उवाच एवं धर्मे प्रवदति स सम्राड्-द्विजसत्तम । समाहितेन मनसा विखेदः पर्यचष्ट तम् ॥ १-१७-२१ ॥
Sūta Gosvāmī said: O best among the brāhmaṇas, the Emperor Parīkṣit, thus hearing the personality of religion speak, was fully satisfied, and without mistake or regret he gave his reply. ॥ 1-17-21 ॥

सूत गोस्वामी ने कहा : हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ, धर्म को इस तरह बोलते सुनकर, सम्राट परीक्षित अत्यन्त सन्तुष्ट हुए और बिना किसी त्रुटि या खेद के उन्होंने इस तरह उत्तर दिया। ॥ १-१७-२१ ॥

राजोवाच धर्मं ब्रवीषि धर्मज्ञ धर्मोऽसि वृषरूपधृक् । यदधर्मकृतः स्थानं सूचकस्यापि तद्भवेत् ॥ १-१७-२२ ॥
The King said: O you, who are in the form of a bull! You know the truth of religion, and you are speaking according to the principle that the destination intended for the perpetrator of irreligious acts is also intended for one who identifies the perpetrator. You are no other than the personality of religion. ॥ 1-17-22 ॥

राजा ने कहा : अहो! तुम तो बैल के रूप में हो। तुम तो धर्म के सत्य को जानते हो और तुम सिद्धान्त के अनुसार बोल रहे हो कि अधार्मिक कर्मों के अपराधी के लिए वांछित गन्तव्य (गति) वही है, जो उस अपराधी की पहचान करनेवाले की है। तुम साक्षात् धर्म के अतिरिक्त अन्य कोई नहीं हो। ॥ १-१७-२२ ॥

अथवा देवमायाया नूनं गतिरगोचरा । चेतसो वचसश्चापि भूतानामिति निश्चयः ॥ १-१७-२३ ॥
Thus it is concluded that the Lord’s energies are inconceivable. No one can estimate them by mental speculation or by word jugglery. ॥ 1-17-23 ॥

इस प्रकार निष्कर्ष यह निकलता है कि भगवान् की शक्तियाँ अचिन्त्य हैं। कोई न तो मानसिक चिन्तन द्वारा, न ही शब्द-चातुरी द्वारा उनका अनुमान लगा सकता है। ॥ १-१७-२३ ॥

तपः शौचं दया सत्यमिति पादाः कृते कृताः । अधर्मांशैस्त्रयो भग्नाः स्मयसङ्गमदैस्तव ॥ १-१७-२४ ॥
In the age of Satya [truthfulness] your four legs were established by the four principles of austerity, cleanliness, mercy and truthfulness. But it appears that three of your legs are broken due to rampant irreligion in the form of pride, lust for women, and intoxication. ॥ 1-17-24 ॥

सत्ययुग में तुम्हारे चारों पैर तपस्या, पवित्रता, दया तथा सचाई के चार नियमों द्वारा स्थापित थे। किन्तु ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि अहंकार, कामवासना तथा नशे के रूप में सर्वत्र व्याप्त अधर्म के कारण तुम्हारे तीन पाँव टूट चुके हैं। ॥ १-१७-२४ ॥

इदानीं धर्म पादस्ते सत्यं निर्वर्तयेद्यतः । तं जिघृक्षत्यधर्मोऽयमनृतेनैधितः कलिः ॥ १-१७-२५ ॥
You are now standing on one leg only, which is your truthfulness, and you are somehow or other hobbling along. But quarrel personified [Kali], flourishing by deceit, is also trying to destroy that leg. ॥ 1-17-25 ॥

अब तुम केवल एक पाँव पर खड़े हो, जो तुम्हारा सत्य है और तुम अब किसी न किसी तरह से जी रहे हो। किन्तु छल से फूलने-फलने वाला यह कलह-रूप कलि उस पाँव को भी नष्ट करना चाह रहा है। ॥ १-१७-२५ ॥
