तत्रावाह्य शिवं साम्बं भक्त्या पञ्चाक्षरेण ह ।। पत्रपुष्पादिभिर्वन्यैस्समानर्च शिशुः स वै ।। १६ ।।

There he invoked Lord Śiva and Samba with devotion in the five syllables. The child was worshiped with leaves flowers and other wild offerings.

tatrAvAhya zivaM sAmbaM bhaktyA paJcAkSareNa ha || patrapuSpAdibhirvanyaissamAnarca zizuH sa vai || 16 ||

ध्यात्वा शिवं च तं साम्बं जपन्पञ्चाक्षरम्मनुम् ।। समभ्यर्च्य चिरं कालं चचार परमन्तपः ।। १७ ।।

He meditated on Śiva along with Pārvatī repeating the five-syllabled mantra. Worshipping thus he performed great penance for a long time.

dhyAtvA zivaM ca taM sAmbaM japanpaJcAkSarammanum || samabhyarcya ciraM kAlaM cacAra paramantapaH || 17 ||

तपसा तस्य बालस्य ह्युपमन्योर्महात्मनः ।। चराचरं च भुवनं प्रदीपितमभून्मुने ।। १८ ।।

O sage, due to the penance of the boy Upamanyu, the great soul, the whole world consisting of the mobile and immobile beings blazed as it were.

tapasA tasya bAlasya hyupamanyormahAtmanaH || carAcaraM ca bhuvanaM pradIpitamabhUnmune || 18 ||

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शंभुर्विष्ण्वाद्यैः प्रार्थितः प्रभुः ।। परीक्षितुं च तद्भक्तिं शक्ररूपोऽभवत्तदा।। १९।।

In the meantime, requested by Viṣṇu aud others, Śiva assumed the form of Indra in order to test his devotion.

etasminnantare zaMbhurviSNvAdyaiH prArthitaH prabhuH || parIkSituM ca tadbhaktiM zakrarUpo'bhavattadA|| 19||

शिवा शचीस्वरूपाभूद्गणाः सर्वेऽभवन्सुराः।। ऐरावतगजो नन्दी सर्वमेव च तन्मयम् ।। २०।।

Pārvatī took the form of Śacī. The Gaṇas became the gods, Nandin became the elephant Airāvata. Everything belonging to Śiva became that of Indra.

zivA zacIsvarUpAbhUdgaNAH sarve'bhavansurAH|| airAvatagajo nandI sarvameva ca tanmayam || 20||
