आजगाम पुनस्तत्र पश्यन्ती बह्वशोभनम् ।। देवांश्च तान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ सुवर्चा विस्मिताभवत्।। ३६।।

After coming there and seeing the most inauspicious occurrence there, O excellent sage, the surprised Suvarcā spoke to the gods.

english translation

AjagAma punastatra pazyantI bahvazobhanam || devAMzca tAnmunizreSTha suvarcA vismitAbhavat|| 36||

ज्ञात्वा च तत्सर्वमिदं सुराणां कृत्यं तदानीञ्च चुकोप साध्वी ।। ददौ तदा शापमतीव रुष्टा तेषां सुवर्चा ऋषिवर्यभार्या ।। ३७।।

The chaste lady, on realising that all this was the action of the gods, became angry. The infuriated wife of the excellent sage, Suvarcā, cursed them.

jJAtvA ca tatsarvamidaM surANAM kRtyaM tadAnIJca cukopa sAdhvI || dadau tadA zApamatIva ruSTA teSAM suvarcA RSivaryabhAryA || 37||

सुवर्चोवाच ।। अहो सुरा द्रुष्टतराश्च सर्वे स्वकार्यदक्षा ह्यबुधाश्च लुब्धाः ।। तस्माच्च सर्वे पशवो भवन्तु सेन्द्राश्च मेऽद्यप्रभृतीत्युवाच ।। ३८।।

Suvarcā said:— “Ah! the gods are very wicked. They are covetous, stupid but very skifīil in manipulating their own affairs. Let them all, inclusive of Indra, become beasts from today.”

suvarcovAca || aho surA druSTatarAzca sarve svakAryadakSA hyabudhAzca lubdhAH || tasmAcca sarve pazavo bhavantu sendrAzca me'dyaprabhRtItyuvAca || 38||

एवं शापन्ददौ तेषां सुराणां सः तपस्विनी ।। सशक्राणां च सर्वेषां सुवर्चा मुनिकामिनी ।। ३९।।

Suvarcā, a woman saint and the beloved wife of the sage cursed the gods inclusive of Indra thus.

अनुगन्तुम्पतेर्लोकमथेच्छत्सा पतिव्रता।। चितां चक्र समेधोभिः सुपवित्रैर्मनस्विनी ।। ४० ।।

That chaste lady desired to go to the worlds of her husband. With the sacred twigs, the noble lady prepared the funeral pyre.
