नभोवाण्युवाच ।। हे देवा असुराश्चैव मन्थध्वं क्षीरसागरम् ।। भवताम्बलबुद्धिर्हि भविष्यति न संशयः ।। ६ ।।

The celestial voice said:— O gods, O Asuras, churn the milk-ocean. Undoubtedly a factual test of your strength will take place.

english translation

nabhovANyuvAca || he devA asurAzcaiva manthadhvaM kSIrasAgaram || bhavatAmbalabuddhirhi bhaviSyati na saMzayaH || 6 ||

मन्दरं चैव मन्थानं रज्जुं कुरुत वासुकिम् ।। मिथस्सर्वे मिलित्वा तु मंथनं कुरुतादरात् ।। ७ ।।

Make Mandara your churning rod and Vāsuki your churning rope. Unitedly you carry on the churning with firm devotion.

english translation

mandaraM caiva manthAnaM rajjuM kuruta vAsukim || mithassarve militvA tu maMthanaM kurutAdarAt || 7 ||

नन्दीश्वर उवाच ।। नभोगता तदा वाणीं निशम्याथ सुरासुरः ।। उद्योगं चक्रिरे सर्वे तत्कर्तुं मुनिसत्तम ।। ८ ।।

Nandīśvara said:— O excellent sage, on hearing the celestial voice the gods and the Asuras exerted themselves in carrying out the plan.

english translation

nandIzvara uvAca || nabhogatA tadA vANIM nizamyAtha surAsuraH || udyogaM cakrire sarve tatkartuM munisattama || 8 ||

सुसन्धायाखिलास्ते वै मन्दरम्पर्वतोत्तमम् ।। कनकाभं च सरलं नानाशोभार्चितं ययुः ।। ९ ।।

Allying together they went straight to the excellent mountain Mandara of golden splendour and of diverse lustre.

susandhAyAkhilAste vai mandaramparvatottamam || kanakAbhaM ca saralaM nAnAzobhArcitaM yayuH || 9 ||

सुप्रसाद्य गिरीशं तं तदाज्ञप्ताः सुरासुराः ।। बलादुत्पाटयामासुर्नेतुकामाः पयोऽर्णवम् ।। १० ।।

After propitiating Śiva and after obtaining his consent they tried to uproot the Mandara in their desire to take it to the milk-ocean.
