    कट्वम्ललवणात्युष्णतीक्ष्णरूक्षविदाहिनः । आहारा राजसस्येष्टा दुःखशोकामयप्रदाः ॥ १७-९॥kaTvamlalavaNAtyuSNatIkSNarUkSavidAhinaH । AhArA rAjasasyeSTA duHkhazokAmayapradAH ॥ 17-9॥Foods that are bitter, sour, very salty, exceedingly heating, very pungent, dry and burning, are all dear to one having rajas; they produce pain, sorrow and disease.

    अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः । दम्भाहङ्कारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥ १७-५॥azAstravihitaM ghoraM tapyante ye tapo janAH । dambhAhaGkArasaMyuktAH kAmarAgabalAnvitAH ॥ 17-5॥Those men who practice terrible austerity not enjoined by the Shaastras ( Scriptures ), given to ostentation and conceit, and prompted by the force of sensual desires and passion;

    यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः । प्रेतान्भूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसा जनाः ॥ १७-४॥yajante sAttvikA devAnyakSarakSAMsi rAjasAH । pretAnbhUtagaNAMzcAnye yajante tAmasA janAH ॥ 17-4॥The Sattvik types worship the gods. The Rajas types worship Yakshas and Rakshasas. And the others, the Tamas types, worship the departed ancestors and hosts of Bhutas.

    सत्त्वानुरूपा सर्वस्य श्रद्धा भवति भारत । श्रद्धामयोऽयं पुरुषो यो यच्छ्रद्धः स एव सः ॥ १७-३॥sattvAnurUpA sarvasya zraddhA bhavati bhArata । zraddhAmayo'yaM puruSo yo yacchraddhaH sa eva saH ॥ 17-3॥O Bharat ( Arjun )! The faith of each is in accordance with his nature. The man consists of faith. Whatever his faith is, that verily is he.

    श्रीभगवानुवाच । त्रिविधा भवति श्रद्धा देहिनां सा स्वभावजा । सात्त्विकी राजसी चैव तामसी चेति तां श‍ृणु ॥ १७-२॥zrIbhagavAnuvAca । trividhA bhavati zraddhA dehinAM sA svabhAvajA । sAttvikI rAjasI caiva tAmasI ceti tAM za‍RNu ॥ 17-2॥Shri Bhagvan said That faith of the embodied beings, born of their own nature, is threefold-born of sattva, rajas and tamas.     अर्जुन उवाच । ये शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः । तेषां निष्ठा तु का कृष्ण सत्त्वमाहो रजस्तमः ॥ १७-१॥arjuna uvAca । ye zAstravidhimutsRjya yajante zraddhayAnvitAH । teSAM niSThA tu kA kRSNa sattvamAho rajastamaH ॥ 17-1॥Arjun said O Krishna ! Those who, setting aside Shaastravidhi ( the ordinances of the scriptures ), perform Yagya ( sacrifice ) with faith, what is their condition? It is Sattva, Rajas or Tamas?

    तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ । ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥ १६-२४॥tasmAcchAstraM pramANaM te kAryAkAryavyavasthitau । jJAtvA zAstravidhAnoktaM karma kartumihArhasi ॥ 16-24॥Therefore, Shaastra ( the scripture ) is your authority as regards the determination of what is to be done and what is not to be done. After understanding (your) duty as presented by Shaastravidhi ( scriptural injunction ), you ought to perform (your duty) here.
