वृत्तान्योजकृतानि स्युर्दुःखे यानि भवन्ति हि । तानि द्रुतासु योज्यानि लघुयुग्मकृतानि तु ॥ ४१॥
Metres which are irregularly constructed (ayojaka) and are associated with sorrowful situations are to be applied in the Drutā Dhruvās; and those constructed with pairs of short syllables (laghu-yugma) are likewise to be employed in them.

यानि चाल्पाक्षराणि स्युरल्पच्छन्दःकृतानि तु । तानि स्थितावकृष्टासु कार्या ह्याक्षेपिकीषु च ॥ ४२॥
Metres which consist of a small number of syllables and are formed as minor metres are to be applied in the Sthitā, Apakṛṣṭā, as well as in the Ākṣepikī Dhruvās.

गुर्वादिस्तु गुरुः कार्यो लघ्वादिश्च लघुस्तथा ये त्वोजच्छन्दसां युक्ता ज्ञेया ते क्षेपिकी तथा यान्योजयुग्मछन्दांसि ज्ञेयान्याक्षेपिकी तथा । लघुयुग्मकृता याऽस्या स्थिता साऽऽक्षेपिकी भवेत् ॥ ४३॥
A metre beginning with a long syllable should be employed in the Sthitā Dhruvā, and likewise one beginning with a short syllable should be employed in the Drutā Dhruvā. Those metres which are associated with vigorous (ojaḥ) movement are to be known as belonging to the Ākṣepikī Dhruvā. Metres consisting of paired arrangements (yugma) are likewise to be regarded as applicable to the Ākṣepikī Dhruvā. That metre which is formed with pairs of short syllables in the Sthitā becomes the Ākṣepikī Dhruvā.

विषमांशाक्षराणि स्युः पदैरर्थवशानुगाः । शम्यातालेन ता योज्या वर्णेनाकर्षितेन तु ॥ ४४॥
Metres having uneven numbers of syllables in their parts (padas) should be arranged in accordance with the sense (artha). These are to be applied with the Śamyā Tāla, and with the syllables suitably prolonged (ākarṣita).

जातीनां त्वथ सर्वासां छन्दोऽवृत्तनिदर्शनम् । स्थानप्रमाणसञ्ज्ञाभिर्गदतो मे निबोधत ॥ ४५॥
Now, with regard to all these classes, understand from me the illustration of metres (chandas) in their various forms (vṛtta), described according to their position (sthāna), measure (pramāṇa), and designation (saṃjñā).
